This is a good question. I like it.
First of all, what does prosper mean?

Many here have mentioned volleyball as a comparison. In volley for the past 20 years we have essentially had 2 federation heads - Yazdani Khorram, and Davarzani.
Yazdani Khorram was very much a trial and error kind of guy - he made tons of mistakes, especially his first decade in charge, but in the early 2000s he and his team completely changed the focus of volleyball from top down to bottom up.

Youth volleyball very much became the priority. In a span of 5 years we had developed U-19 and U-21 teams that could compete on the world stage. Scouting camps were set up routinely all over Iran. Good players were discovered and developed. Coaching classes were provided to teach.
Eventually those players were moved to the senior team and had good world experience. We went from finishing 5th or 6th in Asia (simply due to being the strongest teams physically) to being a top 10 world squad. Our team is now at a level where last olympics our fans had a not too crazy expectation that we could perhaps even medal!

    Now compare that to football!

    Have we had any stability?
Have we had a focus on youth development?
Have we had a consistent vision that was implemented regardless of who the IFF head was?
    Nope.

Our teams have done well simply because we had a random good coach, or usually random very good players.
So if volleyball can be so successful, why can't football?
Two reasons - money and politics.

Football worldwide attracts sleazy, dirty, loudmouth, kooche bazaari assholes. People who have no clue about modern football, but love the sport so they want to impose their views. Sometimes they're hands off, but that's almost always the exception.

Football, also for whatever reason, is the most popular for the general population. Political types (both pro and anti-Iran) view it as a way of winning favor for their views. In truth both should GTFO of football.

The money part is pretty simple too.

Even if we had a perfect youth system, we would lose all of them to top European clubs as soon as they're 18 or 19, simply because we can't compete with them financially.
There is enough money in football that the usual hyenas in Iran are always looking at it, but its nothing compared to what the costs of running a proper league is now, or the costs of stadiums, or tv rights (IRIB is another issue too)...

So in short, we won't reach our potential in football with IR, simply because they don't care or they're incompetent, and sometimes intentionally destructive. On top of all that we have the same issues any football loving nation has - dirty agents, poor planning, too any cooks in the kitchen. ...

@golffan: Traitors are those in Canada who made sure the game gets canceled. Bunch of mentally deranged people whose hatred toward a regime has turned into hatred of the nation. They insulted our FFIRI and national team. If you are one of them then you have no place on this forum.

IRI supporters would never praise Iran Novin Party achievements Don't forget IRI hanged Hoveyda (Iran Novin Party).

Under IRI there were some Sport achievements whether you like or not. I said it as it is.

I have no political affiliation. Payandeh Bad Iran.

Firstly "Middle East" is a political term not a geographical one, use "West Asia" instead. OK, my bad yes many women's teams outside Europe and North America appeared from 1979 onwards.

Why are you attacking me? I am not defending Hijab or women not being able to attend stadiums or segregation of men and women.

I think all these points are great...but there is an issue we are all sidestepping. It's the selfish attitude we bring into football, a team game. Guys like Gholizadeh who refuse to pass a clear chance on goal. Our inability at times to teach systems and moving into space to find and create chances for teammates. Football is a team sport but our youth learn from the start if you aren't scoring you can't be famous. Our legends are always known for offense...not the team game or defense.

I say this because money and politics aside look at Beach Soccer and Futsal. We are a powerhouse but those lend well to gol kuchik mentality. In football we need a grass routes movement that focuses on fundamentals...not just going for goal and glory. Without this all the money in the world won't change anything. Just look at Arab teams.

He also forgot the Khomeinist treacherous regime prolonging the war by not accepting early ceasefire (killing 100s of thousands of our youth) - which lead to our real darkest era: the 1980s

I mean, to go back to the 40s to early 60s, did countries really even have national teams? A lot of Middle Eastern countries were just in nation-building mode after the colonial fallout and redrawn borders.

And it’s one that does not grant freedoms of any kind, or accommodate people’s demands in any way. What is increasingly clear is that there is clear demand for change in the regime. What the people want is regime change, and no return to the past. There is a very real possibility of regime change." - Nasrin Sotoudeh

Saying we made progress in football under IR is like saying we made progress under IR because we now have Internet, iPhones and Instagram. Both have nothing to do with IR, but are rather initiated by external factors.

Only way we can compare pre IR versus post IR football wise, is by measuring our succes in Asia (which went down the toilet).

Like I side previously, our back to back qualification has nothing to do with progress, but is an effect of Asia getting 4,5 slots.

Also how are we comparing absolute achievements? You should wonder how much progress we made during Pahlavi Era compared to the Era before them (basically being a zoo), and then see if we progressed in the same pace under IR.

The correct comparison is what we achieved under IR vs what we would have achieved if we didn't have this cancer given the way things were progressing. Otherwise we can also say 60 million people have internet and smartphone in Iran now and 0 had it back then.

Just going to remind us where we stood in 1978:
-3 back to back Asian cup wins
-Qualification as one of the 16 teams to the world cup 1978 (whole asia+oceania had 1 spot!)
-Qualifying to 4 out of 5 Olympic games (reaching quarter final in 1976)
-Iranian president of AFC and us basically controlling the whole confederation affairs (now even our clubs can't host their home games!!)
-Four straight asian youth championship wins (five times reaching the final in 5 years)
-Nominee and the favourite for hosting 1984 Olympics
-Nominee for hosting 1990 Fifa world cup

                        Enough said!
I'm not even going to start on the dicussion on the infrastruture and the fact that the two most popular clubs in Asia don't have their own stadium and proper training facilities. For the sake of comparison Taj tehran's facilities in Turkey and Qatar alone in 1970s were better than those held by the clubs from those countries!

No becoming second in a group with only Saudi as a serious competition, then losing to Japan in the playoffs for the third slot and still having a chance to qualify is an external factor. It's not all that hard to understand really...

In 1978 there was only 1 slot for AFC (that included Isreal) and OFC combined. We qualified as the only team, leaving behind teams like Australia, South Korea, Isreal etc. Etc.

In 1974 we lost to the Aussies and in 1970 we didn't even enter.

Don't you see how much more easier it is to qualify when you have 4,5 slots (and one serious competitor less), compared to just 1 slot?

This is why we can only compare results in Asian Cup against each other, and really a 2 year old could see if we progressed during IR or not.

IR has been a tragic disaster for Iran and football is no exception.

We went from three consecutive Asian cups to dissolution of the football infrastructure.

IRGC seems the most logical outcome unfortunetly 😔
