He has now scored 51 goals for Porto, all time.
"This is a totalitarian system whose presence people feel in their blood and in their flesh on a daily basis. And it’s one that does not grant freedoms of any kind, or accommodate people’s demands in any way. What is increasingly clear is that there is clear demand for change in the regime. What the people want is regime change, and no return to the past. There is a very real possibility of regime change." - Nasrin Sotoudeh

^Translation of GoalPoint article
Love him or hate him, you won't ignore him. Medhi Taremi is reduced by many to the frequency with which he wins penalties for the “dragons”, an option for those who conveniently “forget” that the Iranian already had this “talent” with him when he arrived at the Dragon. However, those who understand and really appreciate football, know that the Iranian is much more than that. And he's just reminded us of that, with great fanfare.
Top of the League since 2019
Yes, it's true that Taremi has won no less than 18 penalties in the Liga Bwin since he arrived in Portugal, eight of them still in the service of Rio Ave. But Mehdi is also the player who has scored the most times in the Portuguese league since he landed here, with 54 goals. “Ah, but “half” are penalties!” some will say. Wrong.
Even discounting all that is set pieces, the Iranian scored 38 open-ball goals in the League, once again the top record, ahead of Pedro Gonçalves (33) and Ricardo Horta (32), in the same period. And if, at this point, you still look at Taremi as a mere “area pine tree”, who only thinks about scoring, here is the final blow to your “achometer” convictions: “TareMITO” is also the second player with the most assists in the competition , since 2019/20, with 25 goal passes, just three less than another colleague who, curiously, also attracts many haters: Otávio Monteiro.
Direct entry to the “10.0 club“
But enough with the Iranian butter and let's get back to the main theme, Taremi's grand opening exhibition in the 22/23 season. After eight years of GoalPoint, the players who reached the “perfect” rating of 10.0 in a game playing for a Portuguese club were counted on the fingers of two hands. The number of members of this restricted club confirms the degree of demand of our Antunes algorithm, for some too demanding, for others adequate to the exceptional character with which “perfection” should be awarded.
Taremi, like so many others elected, is included in the group of those who seem to value the rarity with which we usually reward the “perfect” because he has already reacted, with satisfaction and in private, to joining the “10.0 club”. The truth is that he doesn't lack reasons for pride and statistical reasons for the distinction, all coming from his feet, head and, above all, intelligence demonstrated on the field. Here is his statscard from the final against Tondela, followed by some notes that contextualize the exceptional performance he initialed.
Mehdi had five shots (2nd best record in the game behind Loader), three of them on target. Despite having wasted a flagrant opportunity, the Iranian surpassed (by another goal) the Expected Goals he had: 0.7. His first goal turned out to be especially important, as it unlocked the score and resolved the waste that his teammates had been leading up to until then. The opening goal also had historical relevance (see following tweet)
Despite some media attributing assistance (without any methodological point of view) the truth is that not only did Taremi not need it to reach 10.0, but he actually did enough to obtain at least one (legitimate): the Iranian made two blatant occasion passes, wasted by teammates, with 0.2 Expected Assists.
The “King of Persia” completed 28 passes, four of them very close (+50% close to the opposing area), the most of the match being also the player who received the most close passes (10). He missed five passes, to be sure, but none of them in the danger zone.
The "nine" was also the player with the most actions inside the opponent's area (12), the one with the most effective dribbles (three out of five, as many as João Mário) and the one with the most defensive actions in the opponent's midfield (4 ), a predicate that is usually given to the “absent” Otávio, the main specialist of the Portuguese League, in this chapter.
He played two offensive aerial duels and guess what happened? He won both, of course.
In all, Taremi had 54 possessions and only lost nine, an exceptional record for a player whose mission is to take risks and make a difference at the opposing goal.
We are sometimes asked how much would be the rating of a player who reaches 10.0, if there was no maximum. In this case the answer is 10.14. That is a perfect 10 that still allows discounts for the state.
And to close the package with a bow, the Iranian concluded his final without committing or “winning” any foul, removing any margin of embarrassment from the haters. What ill will.

I wonder what his personal habits are, along with his training regimen that has helped specifically lead to this amount of success. A lot of players could learn from his work ethic and drive in our football. It's clear evidence that there are dividends to sacrificing short term money for long term goals and playing in a highly competitive environment

Edit: To your point though about a 2nd keeper:
Per O Jogo, Marchesin’s move to Celta forces Porto to find an alternate GK. Andrew (Gil Vicente), Samuel Portugal (Portimonense), and Luiz Junior (Famalicao) are on consideration list. Celta paid 1M for Marchesin and Porto saved 4M in salary.
