Just on subject of Majid I actually thought his performance vs US was one of the better ones. Bailed us out on multiple occasions with critical interceptions, tackles when US were in transition/had numerical advantage, and generally good on the ball, esp in second half. He also had a really solid game vs Wales.

I also think Majid played well and has become a better player for this move. He still has time on his side - let us not forget that mistakes were also made by our defenders in the qualifying stages. Shoja trying to play out from the back still gives me nightmares.

I counted 3 or 4 instances in just the first half where majid saved us from conceding. He is for sure a different player and has elevated his game since going to kayseri…hopefully AK steps it up too like he was before his injury.

The goal was definitely more ramin fault than majid...pulisic was literally his guy at the start of the play, turned him and ran diagonally into the box while the ball went to the other side of the pitch, ramin just fell asleep as usual and then didnt have recovery pace to get back goalside of him. Blaming majid for that goal is not accurate.

Ramin had great game vs wales, he brought energy and put us on front foot with his penetrations and crossing, and ofc scored a fantastic goal. But it was known for years he is suspect defensively. Moharrami had great games for TM vs Nunez (who was playing LW) and Mane in the 2 big friendlies, he dealt with sterling, pulisic, and leao quite effectively in CL just a few weeks ago. Not recalling him vs the US when we knew our backs would be against the wall was a big mistake by CQ. Same thing on left side, sticking with milad, hajsafi and taremi against dest+Weah (and Musah who shifted from CM to that wing and created huge overload there). In retrospect, speed of Jalali and Torabi would have given us a much better chance of dealing with what the US were doing from that side.

I was big supporter of CQ, and given options still think he is best candidate for the job, but his errors were really poor this WC. Any of us here could have told you that the teams issue was most primarily fitness related. To combat that, a rotational system for player selection across the 3 matches seemed to be the way to go. Yes england game turned out to be a spanking, but in that regard it seemed he was playing to an overall plan. The guys that came in vs Wales were rested and played with great energy. Unfortunately, he trusted them to repeat the trick vs the US and as Sardar said, "badana khali kardan". That to me seems to be an oversight from the fitness department/CQ being emotional trusting some of these guys too much. In back 4: Milad cannot play 2 solid games in a row, Ramin defensively and speed wise was totally wrong vs the US, and while the CBs were ok the pairing of Shoja + Kanani was fresh and hyper motivated.

In midfield Torabi clearly needed to start vs the US and Amiri or Saman for Nour (who was garbage vs the US, really the guy killed us with his lack of any ability on the ball but also lack of defensive awareness) were again quite reasonable introductions to keep everything fresh. Sardar if you asked him probably would have said start me on the bench but somehow he got the nod while being done physically, and CQ refusal to bring Zahedi or even Alipour meant there was no other strong physical/speedy option to help Taremi.

Agreed! One can even go as far as concluding Ramin scored a goal that while was nice to pad stats with did nothing to help us advance. He did contribute to a goal against that cost us advancement. Almost prophetic of Skocic when he stated he disliked Ramin's overall game play.

I agree! I never understand people here and people like Khiabani who criticize CQ for the back line he deployed.. I mean we only allowed ONE goal between the Wales and US games. I repeat, ONE GOAL. That's really good. We did well defensively and the likes of Shoja or Kanaani wouldn't have made a difference.

Hosseini is out this game because of accumulated yellow cards. Karimi came in at the beginning of second half while they were down 2-0. He just scored a very nice goal from the top of the box after dribbling nicely past a guy and placing his shot nicely in the corner and out of reach of the keeper.

lovely goal. He is finally playing after multiple years with bad injury troubles. For our standards he is a very technical, khosh-fekr CM. Too slow for the highest level, yes but if surrounded by the right pieces he can still be a great asset in AC and WCQ moving forward.

Also our only CM now playing at a respectable level in europe. Hope he can regain his starting xi place for rest of season and go from strength to strength

Uh.. that article doesn't say they didn't practice it. It quotes De Sa as saying they didn't have enough time, which is totally different. You insinuated it was never practiced, which doesn't seem to be true.

To be fair, CQ and the staff didn't have enough time (or friendlies) to implement much of anything with confidence. That being said, IMO, they should have gone with the most "vanilla" formation and tactics known to football: the 4-4-2. Against England, it really didn't matter who started at most positions.
