Last week I visited (in observation role) the med day for the Liverpool first team. Essentially, they have one day where they get all the medical/holistic check up: Cardiology (ECG, functional echo), Ophthalmology, ENT, Rheumatology, Ortho/Sports Physicians, Psychologist etc... all see the players one-by-one in a kind of carousel. It is run by one main team doctor who invites local specialists for each field. The whole operation was so smooth.
First things first - the building is an absolute palace. So much ornate stuff everywhere, so much space... I wasn't allowed to take any photos...
Their canteen is amazing, buffet area is fantastic. They have a cafe/smoothie place which looked so nice.
All the food in the buffet looked tasty but was low in terms of sugar etc... They have high-calibre chefs there who cook anything the players want (out of the options) on the fly, and a steak fridge complex where they can choose a steak and the chef makes it how they want. It looked healthy but tasty and I guess it offers the amount of flexibility that people want when they are choosing food.
The players I saw (Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Robertson, Jones, Kelleher, Phillips) were friendly (especially Hendo) but all of them looked like they had such a low body fat index it was crazy - actually some of them looked like junkies because there was so little fat in the face/body. The chef said that before they were given stricter food regimes, but now they get a choice of whatever they want. In the past the players used to go out and get other food (eg pizza, hamburgers) which made them lose their body form but here they had a choice of tasty things which they stuck to.
There was a huge amount of care put into every aspect of their nutrition. There were also specific areas for rest, relaxation pods. Everything was finely tuned
This whole experience made me appreciate how much of a gap there is between levels of football in the european club game and other places. This gives such an advantage to these players I feel, over the season and over their careers as a whole.
Imagine if Saeid would have had the nutrition and holistic work that these guys get on a regular basis...
Anyway i'm hopefully going to go again in three months time
