brighton really cranked it up for last 10 mins but pretty deserved win for AEK. Before that brighton didn't threaten much, got 2 soft pks from stupid AEK mistakes, and levi garcia missed a few great chances on the other end.
AEK played great football overall. Smart in possession, disciplined without the ball, very mature/experienced performance which I guess is how you would describe them as a side. Hajsafi overall good, his 2 deliveries were key. The play he got knocked out on was a very good one to prevent a certain goal.
Milad looked a bit erratic but ultimately no key errors while he was on (not that he didn't try a couple serious fuckups). Still a shadow of his old self, guess that player is well and truly gone.
confirmation that this AEK side are a truly solid team.

Guardian's judgement on Hajsafi:
Brighton attempted to increase the energy, only to be held up for a significant delay when the impressive Hajsafi was taken off on a stretcher.

Hajsafi is like a players you know speed wise he is going to get burned 9 times out of 10 , and probably 9 times out of 10 he is going to make bad offensive decisions, but he still plays cause they coaches feel like his experience outweighs his drawbacks like, idk I like him but I don’t feel secure with him manning the back line against a team that plays with pace , or they will isolate him one on one ,

The riddle of Hajsafi is quite simple: he has been our best LB for many years because there is no competition. He definitely has his flaws, but his net effect is positive. It’s not always about speed, but IQ. He’s a clever player who plays with gheyrat and a fearlessness.
There’s a reason why CQ stuck with him many years. I also had questioned his preference for Taremi, but he proved me wrong, cuz he saw in Mehdi what others like myself couldn’t see.
Kudos to Hajsafi’s performance today and overall career so far with Athens.

Ehsan lacks speed, we all know that. In TM we need to pair him with somebody in front who can help him out (Torabi).
To a decent extent he makes up for it by being solid in most other aspects of the game. His football IQ is high, makes few bad mistakes, doesn't let his mistakes affect his composure afterwards, and emotionally is super calm. Even in this game, he gives away the pk but responds with solid performance from then on and another assist.
In possession he is objectively quite good, helped by his days as a CM. Especially tonight he was great in tight spaces and his short passing is always very accurate. Of course big plus to his game is his set piece delivery which has always been good (Morocco OG immediately comes to mind), even if his goal attempts from FKs usually end up on NASAs radars.
Guy deserves huge credit for what he has been able to accomplish, especially at this stage in his career. Look at the opposite with somebody like milad...started at a much more promising level and ended up being pure goh by age 28.
This AEK team is a perfect fit. A lot of experienced, solid pros who may not have hit the true heights of the european game but are nonetheless reliable international players who remain highly motivated (Vida, Hajsafi, Amrabat, Gacinovic, Jonsson, the polish guys) and a really smart coach who understands his group well and has now shown he can tactically compete at a higher level.

Ehsan isn't the greatest defender, but we also have to remember he's a natural LM or LCM and has been transformed into an LB late in his career.
Not the flashiest or most athletic, but you gotta respect him. He's been with TM for 3 WCs, captained 2 of them, and who knows, maybe he'll be there for a 4th WC?
He's been a TM mainstay and his career has had 3 or 4 acts. From Sepahan, to FSV Frankfurt, to Greece, to Traktor, and now back in Greece playing in the biggest club competition of his career at 33 years old. MOM esque performance against a very good EPL team on the road.
I also respect that he's always sided with the Iranian people. He's had his disagreements with the IR and IFF, suspended for playing an Israeli club, was outspoken during the civil unrest, and did his duty by helping oust Skocic.
Even today, he was still wearing a black wristband long after every other player has stopped.
I'm proud of him. He deserves every inch of success and he's another player who can make a great coach when he's done playing (whenever that may be).
