much more than a fast counter attacking team. Japan has tactical variation that is completely unique in the world of football. It is literally a never before seen style of play that will likely lead them to WC semis next. They are comfortable low block for stretches but then on certain triggers will decide to press as a team high up the pitch for periods, totally disrupting the flow of the opposition's build up and catching them off guard. They have minimized their physical disadvantages vs euro teams with totally unique spacing arrangements. Its rare for any japanese player to get in 1v1 situations where they can be physically manhandled or overpowered. In those cases, there are always 2/3 of their teammates nearby to cover.

They have highly intelligent, adaptable players (in large part bc of their phenomenal university/youth football combined system) that are all improving at a great speed in europe.

Since 2019 when we frankly played a close game with them, outdone only by stupid iranian mental error, they have taken a quantum leap, not just over us, but over all of asia.

I do not see anybody catching them in the long-term. They will only continue to improve at a crazy rate.

Tomiyasu arsenal CBs performance today was phenomenal.

Yes, they had good spells of possession as well, even though they only had 38% possession
This is a very solid Japanese side

We discussed how much of an advantage the European Nations League will become for the mid-tier teams, but I didn't expect teams like Kazakhstan to improve so much

This is a team which is almost all domestic league players, yet their performances both in Nations League (they have won a play off place for Euro, convincingly topping their group) and the European qualifiers in general have been well above expectation

If there was a decent Asia-Africa-Oceania nations league then Iran's lack of legionnaires compared to Korea or Japan wouldn't have much impact when it comes to the biggest stage

It'd be great if we can get a friendly against them.

They play like a real team. Dominated their group stage in nations league (Slovakia, Belarus and Azerbaijan) and still could win their euro qualifiers group based on remaining fixtures (they are in front of Denmark and Slovenia and have FOUR times the number of points of N.Ireland)

The way they play so fluidly with domestic players would be a fantastic test for Iran, agreed

Uzbeks getting great friendlies. We all know Australia, Japan and S. Korea (and Saudi Arabia for that matter) always get great friendlies.

They have an excellent U23, U20 and U17 teams as well. Can see them really coming up.

always been a fan of Uzbeks and Japan.

personally don’t like SK and Australian given our bad blood and drama from years of rivalry. But respect to them for doing well internationally.

overall, Asian football is on the rise. It’ll be great to have AFC be more competitive on the world stage.
