Real Madrid will hire Fabio Capello as coach, the team confirmed Wednesday, a day after he resigned from troubled Italian soccer champion Juventus.
Capello, who led Real Madrid to the 1997 league title, resigned from Juventus on Tuesday, and incoming president Ramon Calderon followed by saying he would hire him. The same day, an Italian prosecutor asked a sports tribunal to demote the team to Serie C or lower and strip the team of the Serie A titles it won in the past two seasons for its role in Italy's match-fixing scandal.
The club said Wednesday on its Web site that Capello would be presented at a news conference at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium the following day.
His contract is expected to be for three years. The 50-year-old Capello, whose contract with Juventus was to expire in 2007, was the first departure from the troubled Turin club.
Capello is regarded as one of Europe's most successful coaches, having won seven Italian league titles with Juventus, AC Milan, and AS Roma, as well as the 1994 Champions League with Milan.
He is faced with the task of reviving the fortunes of a Madrid side which has not won any trophies since 2003. He will also help to decide on the futures of David Beckham, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos.
