Three weeks after France's loss in the World Cup final, the song inspired by Zinedine Zidane's infamous head-butt on Italian defender Marco Materazzi has reached No. 1 on France's singles charts, according to a Reuters report.
"As of today, it's number one in the French charts. It has had an exceptional start, better than we could ever have hoped for," said Thierry Chassagne, president of Warner Music France, which distributes the song.
The song Coup de Boule, French for head-butt, was written by three associates of Plage Records, a small label specializing in jingles and sound effects, the day after the July 9 final in Berlin.
As the report points out, Zidane, one of the world's top soccer players, was ejected after receiving a red card for head-butting Materazzi after exchanging comments with him in extra time with the score tied at 1-all.
The label's founders, brothers Emmanuel and Sebastien Lipszyc, and composer Franck Lascombes, wrote the catchy reggae-style song and its chorus "Zidane, il a tape" ("Zidane, the hit man"), as a cure for their post-loss blues.
The song was initially e-mailed to about 50 friends. But it soon quickly invaded the Web and record labels battled for the rights to produce it.
Warner Music France bought the song from the trio, and two days after its July 20 release it was No. 2 on the French chart, selling 17,000 copies.
Reuters says that more than 75,000 copies were sold in stores in the last 10 days and the tune has been downloaded more than 110,000 times.
