Silva leaves Arsenal to join Panathinaik0s

STOKE, England (AP) - Brazil midfielder Gilberto Silva has left Arsenal to join Panathinaik0s.

The former Gunners captain, who was a key member of the team that went unbeaten through the 2003-04 Premier League season, cost the Greek team a transfer fee reported to be about 1 million pounds (US$2 million; €1.26 million).

The 31-year-old Silva ends a six-year spell with the north London club, with his departure continuing manager Arsene Wenger's policy of ditching older players.

but that wasn't even a penalty. adebayor is good player, but he has really tarnished his image by wanting to move away from the emirates.

Adebayor agrees to sign new Arsenal deal

LONDON (AP) - Emmanuel Adebayor has agreed to stay at Arsenal after being promised an improved contract, ending speculation he would move to FC Barcelona or AC Milan.

The 24-year-old Togo striker, who had three years left on his existing Arsenal contract, said Friday he hopes to stay until at least 2012 when the deal is signed.

"When I was holidaying there was a lot of speculation," he told Arsenal's official Web site. "I have never said I will leave the club and there is no one that can say that. Now I can tell everyone that today yes I will sign a contract.

"I'm feeling very good here, very well here and at the moment my heart is with Arsenal."

Adebayor, who scored 30 goals in 48 appearances last season, sent out conflicting signals during the offseason and was equally ambiguous in discussing his planned new deal.

"I had three years contract and I'm putting two or three years more so it's going to make it four or five," he said on the Arsenal Web site. "I'm very happy at this club and everything is fine."

Adebayor joined Arsenal in January 2006 after an acrimonious departure from Monaco. He was suspended by the French side after missing training, before being sold.

"For me now the most important thing as I always say is keep my head on my shoulders," he said. "What am I going to achieve now, as a player - individual targets, as a collective player for my teammates what are we going to achieve - that's the most important thing now."

Arsene Wenger hopes to attract one more player before the transfer window ends Aug. 31 and didn't rule out an attempt to sign Gareth Barry after Aston Villa said its captain won't be sold to Liverpool.

"If we can get a midfielder with experience that will do it," Wenger said Friday. "We need one more body in there."

When asked about Barry he said: "I don't think the best tactic is to come out with names."

The Gunners haven't won the Premier League since 2004 or any major trophy since the 2005 FA Cup. Wenger's side threw away a five-point lead last season to finish third in the league behind Manchester United and Chelsea.

"Now, we have to work hard together as a family and to deliver better than what we did last season," Adebayor said. "What we hope to achieve is the title and the Champions League, but at the moment the most important thing is to pass through, because we have a qualifying game to play in the Champions League.

"We have a great manager, great squad, good players. It's true we're young, but we know that if we put our hearts together and we work as a family we can achieve something, that's for sure."
