    xabi alonso, no doubt...

volley's like that aren't ENTIRELY rare, but do actually occur at high levels of play...not to take anything away from the goal, it was a CRACKER

xabi alonso's goal was simply magnificent though...how many of you can actually say you can hit the back of the net from that distance?...who has ever tried?...now do it with a professional keeper in front of an EPL team...and then we'll talk...that goal took experience, skill, strength/power and vision..VP's goal took skill and power...

I m not trying to say his is the best because I like spain, I just think that if you re gonna have a list of goals of the whatever, alonso s goal would come before van persie s.....
no ur right man but honestly, van persie's goal was harder to score...cuz he did a crazy jump...timed his jump perfectly to the cross...and smashed the ball with a perfect volley right into the top of the net. Alonso's goal was amazing to, but simply catching the goalie off line and lobbing the ball into the net isn't as difficult as wat van persie did.

faraz jaan I respect your opinion and totally agree on your assessment of Alonso's goal but I have to disagree on the statement that volleys of the nature of van persie's are not that rare.

it's one of the most difficult converted volleys I've seen in recent years. I think it was even harder than the one Zidane scored in the CL final since owing to the speed the ball was coming at him and the height.

Okay you got me with the Pakistani comment...Fair enough....we suck.

but as a football fan, do you REALLY REALLY REALLY think that Majid Abdullah was THAT good ?? Scoring against mediocre Asian teams and choking 99% of the time against ANY European team doesnt constitute as world class...

how the hell can you possibly forget Cantona, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Klinsmann, Weah, Baggio.....? Was Majed even good enough for them ??

Saudi players are over-paid and over-rated period...and playing in the same uninspiring league over and over rather than playing in a real league in Europe, oh wait a minute Saudi players are also over-priced as well and European clubs dont want to pay that much for an average standard player...

forget the 8-0 loss 4 years back, the 4-0 embarassment to Ukraine just proved to how lousy they are...all those 12 or something friendlies you guys played in preparation were worth sh!t....and if must know that was Spain's C team you lost a more respectable 1-0 I am really wondering what the Saudis did with those $10 million the SAFF donated to them for 'preparation'

1994 was 12 years back...time to wake up my friend.

                          OMG Get your facts right!!

If scoring against Brazil, England is considered choking, then I dont think its even worth having this discussion!!

Besides, who are these mediocre Asian teams you're referring to? China? Iran?

how the hell can you possibly forget Cantona, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Klinsmann, Weah, Baggio.....? Was Majed even good enough for them ??
Majed had all the qualities to play in Europe!! I dont think its fair comparing him to those players you mentioned for that reason alone!!

Poor media coverage plus the fact Saudi players werent allowed to play abroad contributed to the fact he hardly gets any recognition!! He's by FAR - Asia and Saudi's best player of all TIME!!

Maybe if you watched him play like i did, and if you ignored the fact he's Saudi, then you'd realise how good he is...

                          Dude, i;ve always woken up!!

As a FOOTBALL FAN, i know the GReat Saudi Football team died in 1996, immediately after the Asian Cup 96...

I dont need people like you to tell me how shit and badly run team we've become ever since!!

What annoys me is "know-nothings" like you who diss my country's team for the simple reason they're Saudis or they're rich!!

Maybe you should concentrate on your own national team(if you have one) before bad-mouthing others...

Plus, who the hell do you think you are trying to tell people not to take me seriously for stating my opinion!!

Nasrawi the only thing I disagree with that you just said is the fact that you think Majed (last name?) or whatever was 'by far the best asian player of all time'. Im not just saying that because im from Iran but because its hard to say he was better than the LEADING international scorer in the HISTORY of football...ALI DAEI! 110 goals in 149 matches is unheard of and his name is known all around the world for it (even though he stayed too long and downplayed himself in the end), but I havent even heard of this Majid your talking about? If you say your players dont get exposure its not too different for us (even worst actually), but that didnt stop him from finding his way to some of Germany's best teams.

For the sake of argument I did see a few clips of Majed Abdullah

See way back in the 1980s, Asian teams were really mediocre..and most of them still are...no matter who ever it was...the defending was just HORRIBLE....I mean Majed just score that goal against South Korea as if the defenders were stoned. The last goal in the clip was plain show-boating against mediocre mediocre MEDIOCRE defending.

Majed could have been a better player had he played in a more well-organised league against better opposition, but then again the Saudi FA is pretty dumb.

Dont get me wrong, I expected alot from all Asian sides in the World Cup...and none delivered...AGAIN !!! Must be my intense anger of these things that got to me.

The standard in Asian football is till short as compared to Europe, South America...even Africa for that matter.

By choking I did not mean scoring...I meant playing like a team and WINNING, any proper European team Saudi Arabia has faced, it has lost over the years while they will rampage and take pride on beating teams like Syria, or India, or Malaysia. They should have beaten or atleast drawn with Turkey or BELGIUM !! Why all this nervousness against European teams ??

Its the real deal that counts i.e. making European teams sweat and stop them from winning

                                Keep the thread clean.

Van Persie's goal was technically superior in my opinion.
