    Barthez retires

    http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?...ces+retirement

French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has called time on his career.

The veteran shot stopper is not attached to any club, having left Marseille prior to the World Cup finals and he feels the time has come for him to experience life away from football.

"I am starting a new life," the 35-year-old former France international said on Thursday. "I will continue to enjoy myself, but without football."

Barthez is bowing out at the very top, as his last competitive game was France's defeat to Italy in the World Cup final.

The former Manchester United keeper has had a distinguished career, racking up 87 caps for his country and winning both the World Cup and European Championship.

He won league titles with Marseille, Monaco and Manchester United and also lifted the UEFA Champions League crown with L'OM in 1993.

I don t think he was close to anything great
He was a solid keeper but also crazy headed and would do stupid things all the time.
                But a good goali

do you mean recently? Or overall? Recently you can make a case, but in 1998 what he did was one of the greatest goalkeeping performances of all time.

1998 he was great, but since his Man Utd time, i just cannot take this goalie serious....

surely not one of the best all time!

you mean borislav mihailov? yeah i read his hair wasn't actually hair i wonder if it ever flew off while he was playing

barthez had his moments. some games he would be amazing, other games he would be absolutely clumsy. i wouldn't call him a world class goalie, but he was top 10 of recent years (98-06).

yeah, Mihailov. he wasn't a bad keeper, just had an awful wig...good glue though since I never heard of it coming off.

hahaha, in his prime he was better than zdravkov another baldy.

it does look pretty damn real though, doesn't it?
