    Lahore, 12 October : The four Jordanian soccer fans apologized to Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) for their misbehavior and confessed their involvement in bringing the 14th Asian Cup match between Pakistan and Jordan yesterday, 11 October 2006 at Punjab Stadium into dilemma.





    "We feel sorry for our shamed act for spoiling the game despite in winning position. We and apologized to AFC's Technical Officials, soccer ruling body in Pakistan PP, their wing Punjab Football Association and local soccer enthusiasts in turning their enjoyment into obscurity on Wednesday night," said all four of them infront of Media at FIFA Football House, Ferozpur Road today.



    The four Jordanians who apologized for indulging in pessimistic activity were Osama Sulieman, Sami Thayiba Almutairi, Mohamad Mahmoud Aqil Shatanawi and Suhaib Mohammed S. Hamdan.

    Punjab Stadium had become third venue with FIFA-approved lights that could hold football match after Islamabad and Karachi . PFF had decorated the stadium with colorful flags and hoardings were fixed all around the ground. A splendid Media Centre was also in operation to facilitate the Print and Electronic Media.

    The atmosphere at the stadium was electrifying with thousands soccer enthusiasts of Jordan and Pakistan were on the terraces, shouting and chanting for their players. They were supporting teams with different slogans and waving flags and colorful buntings.

    The organizers had announced a free entry to the stadium that attracted a large number of citizens to come and enjoy the match. The lights also attracted a number of families to join the passionate spectators.

    The first half went without trouble with Jordan 2-0 up. There were hints of some crowd disturbances in early second session which continued after short intervals. The matter became worse when in the 87th minute a shirt-less Jordanian ran into pitch, followed by batch of policemen. The match was stopped for one-minute and Tajik referee Dilovar Orzuev blew the final whistle after remaining plus injury time, with Jordan winning 3-0.

    Four fans were injured and several others were arrested when Pakistani and Jordanian fans clashed at an Asian Cup football qualifier, officials said.

    Play was halted for 15 minutes and police baton-charged supporters after trouble broke out at the Group C match here on Wednesday night, when Jordan beat Pakistan 3-0.

    "Some Jordanians studying at Lahore University fought with local fans and then fought amongst themselves, which was unsavoury," said Colonel Ahmed Yar Khan, administration director for the Pakistan Football Federation.

    Eyewitnesses said fans kicked and punched each other after some Jordanian supporters chanted slogans about the weak Pakistan display, incensing the locals.

    The match eventually resumed after police dragged the troublemakers from the stadium.

    "It wasn't a big issue but it should not have happened in an otherwise peaceful match," said Khan.

    Pakistan have lost all five of their matches in Group C, which is led by Oman with 12 points followed by the United Arab Emirates with Jordan lying third.

    Two teams will qualify from each group for the finals of the tournament to be jointly held in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam next year. — AFP
