Claude Makelele has signed a one-year extension to his current contract. It will keep the 34-year-old midfielder at Chelsea until 2009.

Makelele, the senior member of the squad, joined Chelsea in the summer of 2003 from Real Madrid.

He has been a key member of the success since, winning back-to-back Barclays Premiership titles in 2004 and 2005, two Carling Cup winners' medals and playing the whole of last May's extra-time FA Cup win over Manchester United.

His Chelsea career to date has included 183 appearances, two as substitute and two goals.

Losing to a team like Aston Villa would have ALWAYS attracted jibes mate,

and dont get me started on the Manchester derby, Citeh are our most annoying rivals and generally try to play and have been good against us over the past many decades despite being generally shite everywhere else - its a whole "we are the real team from Manchester" nonsense that Citeh will try to scream over. So as frustrating it was to pummel them to the ground, Micah Richards was the guy that denied us the chance of putting 3-4 past Schmeichel Jr.
