Drogba ruled out of Chelsea's season opener
Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted Didier Drogba is unlikely to feature for his side until the very end of August.
The 30-year-old has spent the summer recuperating from a knee injury which now looks certain to rule him out of the Blues' opening Barclays Premier League games against Portsmouth, on August 17, and Wigan a week later.
Scolari has pencilled in the London derby against big-spending Tottenham on August 31 for a possible return but admits he will not rush the Ivory Coast star back into action.
'Didier will not play in our first game against Portsmouth and will probably miss the second against Wigan. If there are no more problems he should be ready for the game after that,' said Scolari, who will have to rely on Nicolas Anelka as his only recognised frontman for the first two games of the season as Salomon Kalou is away at the Olympics.
'But when you have a knee injury, you just never know.
'I have been getting a progress report from the doctor every day.
'He's getting better and is working with a fitness coach back at the training ground. I hope he will be ready to start training next week. But he will not play until he is in good condition.'

Robinho: I've Talked To Chelsea
Real Madrid winger Robinho has spoken out over his transfer ordeal, stating that although contact has been made with Chelsea, no deal has yet been decided. Speculation has been rampant in recent days, though, that a move is coming soon...
Robinho: I've Talked To Chelsea
Speaking to Globoesporte, the versatile forward offered a glimpse into his future.
"The season is only just beginning and I have proposals from other clubs, such as Chelsea," he admitted.
"Nothing is secure, though. We're still talking."
The Brazilian, though, gave hints that he was giving serious thought to a move elsewhere after being kept back from his country's Olympic squad, ostensibly due to 'injury.'
"It's awful only being able to see the Olympic selection on television," he sighed.
"My intention was to join up with the group, but Real Madrid didn't want to release me. I'm very sorry about that."
Robinho, 24, was reportedly also upset at being used as something of a pawn in the proposed Cristiano Ronaldo deal.

Hull City after Pizarro
Premier League new boys Hull City have identified Chelsea marksman Claudio Pizarro as the latest solution to their striking problems.
The Tigers have made enquiries about Pizarro, who scored only two goals in 31 appearances for the Blues last season.
Hull need to add more firepower to their forward line and manager Phil Brown believes 29-year-old Pizarro, who has also been linked with a loan move to Stoke, is the answer.
"We've made contact with Chelsea with regards to Claudio," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.
"It's a very expensive option, but again, it would be an option if we were allowed to speak to the lad. If that happened then who knows?
"But as far as we are concerned we have made contact with Chelsea and that's where it lies at the moment."
Pizarro arrived at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer from Bayern Munich last summer but made little impression.
The out-of-favor Peruvian is reported to be surplus to requirements at Chelsea but he may have to wait for an update on the Blues' approach for Robinho before being allowed to leave.
Hull open their Premier League campaign against Fulham on Saturday with striker Caleb Folan a doubt after sustaining an abductor injury.
The Tigers have already seen moves for Kevin Davies, Marlon King and Fraizer Campbell fall through and will start with Dean Windass up front against the Cottagers

Drogba has no plans to quit Chelsea
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has assured the club's supporters that he will remain at Stamford Bridge for at least another two seasons.
The Ivory Coast international has been linked with a move away from the club all summer, with Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan all thought to be possible destinations for the 30-year-old.
However, Drogba insists he is going nowhere and will happily see out his contract with the Blues.
"I have always said that I am very happy at Chelsea," he told France Football. "It's a great team with great players and a great coach.
"Everything's going well here and I have two years left on my contract and I will spend them at Chelsea."
In an interview with the same magazine last October, soon after the departure of Jose Mourinho as manager, Drogba claimed he wanted to quit Stamford Bridge.
"I want to leave Chelsea," he said. "Something is broken with Chelsea. Nothing can stop me from leaving now."
He later said he regretted the remarks and was "100% committed" to Chelsea.

Lampard signs new 5-year contract with Chelsea
LONDON (AP) - Frank Lampard ended speculation over his future on Wednesday by signing a new five-year contract with Chelsea.
Lampard had just one year left on his previous agreement, and British papers have been reporting for months that he was considering a move to Italy or Spain because he was unhappy with the offer Chelsea had made him.
Inter Milan, which is coached by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, was rumored to be his most likely destination, but Lampard decided to extend his seven-year stay with the Blues.
"I've just turned 30 and I see it as my final big contract, and I will play out my days at Chelsea," Lampard said.
"It has taken a while to get the deal done and there has been a bit of compromise on both sides."
He has 110 goals in 369 appearances for the Blues.

Milan claim Sheva return is 'close'
AC Milan director Silvano Ramaccioni believes Chelsea flop Andriy Shevchenko is on the verge of securing a return to the San Siro.
The Ukraine striker has endured two disappointing years at Stamford Bridge following a big-money move from Milan.
Reports suggest Shevchenko could return to Milan in what would initially be a season-long loan deal following a meeting between former club president Silvio Berlusconi and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in Sardinia last Thursday.
The Italian press claim the deal will be finalised on Thursday or at the latest 24 hours later and Ramaccioni agrees.
"Shevchenko in the Rossoneri shirt? There really isn't much more to be done," he told Radio Goal. "We are close to the end of the deal and I hope that these little things that have to be fulfilled are done as soon as possible.
"I would be extremely delighted if Shevchenko returns to Milan and I am ready to embrace the Ukraine champion again, for us it's about a return home."
Shevchenko is AC Milan's second-most prolific goalscorer of all-time having scored 127 goals in 208 games during a seven-year career.

Luiz Felipe Scolari admits Chelsea squad left short with January arrivals likely
After the club's failure to sign Robinho from Real Madrid during the summer, Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari will demand funds to strengthen a squad he feels has been left short during the next transfer window in January.
Scolari had remained light-lipped about the proposed move to bring his compatriot to Stamford Bridge, referring all questions on the matter to Peter Kenyon, who spent much of last week in Madrid and went public with his belief that Chelsea were favourites to sign such players, even from a club of the stature of Real.
Privately Scolari had been assured that Robinho, who along with Portuguese midfielder Deco were the two names the new manager gave to Chelsea as his main targets, would join his squad.
The extraordinary turn of events at Manchester City and their British transfer record signing of the player was as unwelcome as it was unexpected for Chelsea and has left Scolari with a squad below what he considers an adequate size to compete on four fronts.
Claude Makelele, Tal Ben-Haim, Andriy Shevchenko, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Steve Sidwell and Claudio Pizarro have all left Stamford Bridge with only Deco and compatriot Jose Bosingwa joining the first-team squad, leaving only 23 members in a squad that has ambitions to win both the Premier League and Champions League, as well as the domestic cups.
With Didier Drogba still recovering from injury Scolari can only chose from Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka to lead his line at present and further injuries in that area of the side would leave Chelsea exposed.
"I wanted up to 25, not 23," said Scolari, "because we have new rules from Uefa and I need to put some players from the academy and from England, so I need a balance."
"When I arrived I had 28, 29, 30 players, but now I choose 25. In January, maybe, I'll have one more player in, or one or two leaving.
"Now I know the balance of the team, what I need if I have injuries here or there. Before I didn't know very well what was happening with the players.
"In the future, we'll change one or two players. That's normal. All of the coaches in the world, when they arrive, assess the players. After that, my idea is better to buy one player for this position or sell one from that position."
Chelsea continue to hold a desire to bring Kaka to the club in the long term, and have been in negotiations with AC Milan over a possible transfer next summer.
However, their failure to land the signature of Robinho may encourage them to try and bring the deal forward to January, in the knowledge that Milan's absence from the Champions League this season would leave the Brazilian available for the latter stages of the tournament next year.
