The Chelsea Transfer Season Grade by Nick Webster

          Chelsea
IN — Deco and Jose Bosingwa

Buy the devil you know and not the one you don't. This must be the motto of new Blues boss 'Big Phil' Scolari as both players spent the summer with the Brazilian at Euro 2008. I think Chelsea may have overpaid for Deco ($16 million for a 30-year-old) but there can be no denying his talent, even if the Premiership may be a little too quick for him. Bosingwa should have no trouble adapting to life in England and West London. He showed his class at the Euros, making the all-tournament team but, c'mon ... $32 million for a full-back must be considered a little silly?

OUT — Khalid Boulahrouz, Steve Sidwell, Harry Worley, Hernan Crespo and Claude Makelele

Boulahrouz was a bust, as was Sidwell, and why either of these players was signed is a 'Special One' mystery. I've never even heard of Worley, probably due to the fact that he never made a first-team appearance, and as for Crespo — did he ever have his heart in it? Makelele sure had his heart in it though and his loss will be keenly felt. Watching the Frenchman play live was an absolute treat.

Rumors and want-aways — Kaka, Robinho, Andrei Arshavin, Frank Lampard, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Didier Drogba

Is there a player on the planet who isn't linked with Chelsea? Either Kaka or Robinho would be sensational for the Stamford Bridge faithful, however it would emphasize just how far Roman Abramovich is prepared to move the goalposts in his quest for domination. Arshavin is an interesting one and I'm surprised the buzz has cooled on him recently — I think he'd fit right in to the Premiership.

Can someone please tell Lampard to stop posturing and French kiss his club badge or just go to Inter. English players are so insulated — they really need to start broadening their horizons and 'Super Frank' is a perfect case-in-point. Who doesn't think he will become a better player after a couple of seasons in the Serie A? As for SWP — run don't walk for the exit. And then there is Drogba! Other than his goals, of which there were many, would he be missed? It would take a bold manager to sell him though.

Grade — B+: Signing Petr Cech and Michael Essien to new deals is the equivalent of two new players, and throw in the 'Portugeysers' and Chelsea looks ominous.

Lampard will be staying at the Bridge

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has decided to stay at Stamford Bridge for family reasons.

Italian champions Inter had been hoping to sign the England star, who has just one year remaining on his Blues contract.

Moratti feels Lampard would be keen on a move to the Giuseppe Meazza, but family matters have persuaded him to stick with Chelsea.

"Was I disappointed by his attitude? Not at all, I found him to be very serious and focused," Moratti, who has brought in Sulley Muntari from Portsmouth, told Sky Sport Italia.

"He wanted to leave Chelsea, I am certain of that, although it created a lot of anxiety for him and in fact he remained because of family matters.

"He stayed for his father, who he is extremely close to, and for his whole environment. Therefore he was unable to create that split that they expected and we were hoping for.

"(Inter coach Jose) Mourinho did hope for this move, but we knew it was going to be difficult.

"So instead we thought of a player who in terms of age and wages is a good deal: I am happy that Sulley Ali Muntari has arrived."

Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri, meanwhile, believes Chelsea would have let him buy Lampard this summer - but he had no intention of moving for his former player.

Ranieri believes Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would have been more willing to let one of his star players move to Juventus - despite the London club's assertion they do not sell their best players to anyone.

"If I'd have asked, he would have given him to me," said Ranieri. "But not to Mourinho. "I'll let you figure out why.

"However, I never thought about buying him."

Ranieri believes the England international, who he signed from West Ham during his time at Stamford Bridge, would do well in Italy.

"I'm very attached to Lampard," he added. "He would be great in Italy because he is always interested in different types of football.

"He loves knowing about football and that's why he wouldn't have much of a problem adapting."

Lampard now seems certain to remaining at Stamford Bridge, at least for the remaining year of his contract.

Scolari to leave Shevchenko on the scrapheap?

Andriy Shevchenko faces a struggle to break into the Chelsea side under Luiz Felipe Scolari after the Brazilian hinted he has no chance of starting the Premier League opener against Portsmouth.

The Ukrainian striker has endured two disappointing years at Stamford Bridge following a big-money move from AC Milan.

Shevchenko came on as a substitute against Lokomotiv Moscow in the pre-season Railways Cup on Friday but missed the decisive penalty as Chelsea were beaten in a shootout.

The Blues will play Shevchenko's former club AC Milan in the third-place play-off on Sunday, but the striker will not play a major role.

Scolari said: 'I came here to this tournament to look at my team for the game against Portsmouth and I need to prepare my team for that game.

'If I have a chance to put three or four more players into the game, I will. If not, I will follow my idea for the game against Portsmouth.

'I'm not thinking about giving Shevchenko a game. If I need to put him or Franco Di Santo in the game, I will, but my idea is about Portsmouth. I know 75% of my team. Now, maybe 85%.'

Chelsea remain hopeful of landing Robinho

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon admits talks with Real Madrid about Robinho have stalled but remains hopeful of signing the Brazil attacker.

The Blues have been linked with the former Santos star at various points over the summer and Kenyon believes Madrid's eagerness to secure a replacement is the only factor behind the delay.

'One of the key issues over buying Robinho has always been that Real Madrid are looking for a replacement,'' he told the club website, chelseafc.com.

'It is fair to say that is what has been holding up discussions between the two clubs.

'It has not progressed over the last couple of days but the window is open until the end of August and there's still plenty of time to run.''

Kenyon also insisted Didier Drogba, who is currently recovering from a knee injury and has been linked with Madrid, will not be sold and played down talk of a move for Werder Bremen playmaker Diego.

'I think there is absolutely no question that any deal will be done with regard to Didier Drogba,'' Kenyon added. 'Didier is in rehab and will continue to be a Chelsea player. We can squash that one.

'With regard to Diego, I was (as) amazed as everybody else to read it in the newspapers this morning, so again, I think that's just pure speculation.'

Chelsea 5 AC Milan 0 (Anelka with 4)

Four goals from Nicolas Anelka helped Chelsea claim 3rd place in the Railways Cup tournament in Moscow after AC Milan were thrashed 5-0.

Milan's Brazilian star and Chelsea target Kaka did not feature as his team put in a miserable display, typified by some comically inept goalkeeping by Zeljko Kalac.

A strong Chelsea line-up saw Michael Ballack make his first appearance of the Blues' pre-season following his late return to the squad after Euro 2008 duty with Germany.

But it was his central midfield partner Frank Lampard who put Luiz Felipe Scolari's side ahead in the second minute when his curling free-kick was missed by everyone and the ball flew in through Milan keeper Kalac's legs.

It was two in the eighth minute when Anelka latched on to a poor defensive header to fire home low from the edge of the area.

The Frenchman added a third 10 minutes later when Kalac's day went from bad to worse.

Attempting to clear a routine backpass, the Australian kicked nothing but air, allowing Anelka to steal in and tap into an empty net.

Chelsea were utterly dominant and Shaun Wright-Phillips very nearly headed a fourth soon afterwards as they sought to make amends for their shoot-out defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow two days ago.

A Milan side with no recognised strikers, but featuring former Arsenal star Mathieu Flamini in midfield, were providing little resistance and Anelka completed his hat-trick six minutes after the restart.

Deco played in Florent Malouda down the left and the winger's cross found his countryman, who headed accurately into the corner of the net.

Remarkably if was four for Anelka and five for Chelsea in the 58th minute when another flowing move down the left ended with Malouda centring once more for the former Bolton striker to volley home.

The Premier League runners-up took their foot off the gas in the last quarter but still dominated and the lively Malouda fired narrowly over with a good long-range effort.

Drogba set to sign Chelsea deal

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba looks set to end speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge by signing a new four-year deal.

The Ivory Coast international has hinted that he will remain a Blues player despite interest from a number of top European sides.

AC Milan, Barcelona and Inter Milan have all been rumored to be interested in signing the 30-year-old, who joined the London club four years ago.

Drogba has been in contact with new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari and seems likely to sign a big-money deal that will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until 2012.

"I am confident talks with Chelsea will lead to a positive resolve about my future," Drogba told the Sunday Mirror.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon last week revealed his confidence that their big name stars, including Drogba and captain Frank Lampard, would remain at the club.

Drogba has two years remaining on his current contract but insists a move for more money is not his top priority.

"Chelsea want to speak and I am open to talk," he told The People. "Things have not changed but I am a Blues player.

"Money is not the main factor and if Chelsea show they want me it is possible to accept a proposition."
