USA starlet Adu begins Manchester United trial

American teenager Freddy Adu began a two-week trial with Manchester United this morning.

The 17-year-old has been released for the trip across the Atlantic by his Major League Soccer outfit DC United, who lost in the end-of-season play-off Eastern Conference final 1-0 to New England.

The Ghana-born midfielder has long been touted for soccer superstardom and became the youngest player to represent the United States earlier this year when he came on as a late substitute in a friendly with Canada. At the time he was just 16.

However, despite the impressive CV, Chelsea are reported to have already rejected a chance to sign Adu.

And there was no sign of special treatment for Adu at the Red Devils' Carrington training ground as, with Sir Alex Ferguson's senior squad being put through their paces ahead of tomorrow's Champions League encounter with Celtic, the youngster trained with the club's academy players.

As Adu does not have a UK work permit, he is not able to play in a competitive match, although it is thought United will arrange a closed-doors friendly at some point during his visit.

I am not sure Adu is that capable, he is over-rated because he went through the paces of the utter crap MLS structure in USA that is just plain mediocre. But he is only like 17 so he can become a million times better player at United rather than maintaining that bubble of fame in USA

i like robben but Mourinho doesnt play him lampard is good but over rated we have scholes who is still better than him Shevchenko is flop but Drogba is really really good... man utd has two of the most exciting young players Rooney and Ronaldo

I'll give you Ronaldo is the best player on either team but there is no way Scholes is better than Lampard. Rooney is overatted and Shevchenko and Drogba are both better. I'm pissed at Mourinho for always playing Ballack who I think is way past his prime over wright-phillips and robben. Man U' s weapons are Ronaldo, Saha, and Giggs. Carrick was a waste and I feel sorry for u, imagine 18.6 million what that could have gotten you. Man U should have beaten Real to signing Diarra from Lyon.
