United to consolidate clean-sweep bid at Newcastle

Manchester United can take another step towards an unprecedented clean sweep of five trophies in one season with a victory in Wednesday's Premier League clash at Newcastle.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have already won the Club World Cup and lifted the League Cup against Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday, making the dream of winning every competition they have entered an increasingly distinct possibility.

While Ferguson continues to play down United's chances of sweeping the board, the Scot will know only too well that the next seven days could put his team in an even stronger position.

After their trip to Newcastle, United face Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, then host Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16 second leg next week.

United, who are on a 15-match unbeaten run, have won five of their last six visits to St James' Park, scoring 20 goals in the process.

Ferguson is likely to bring back Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vidic after all three were left out of Sunday's starting line-up, while Wayne Rooney could recover from a virus.

Rio Ferdinand, who captained United at Wembley, warned his teammates they still have room for improvement despite their remarkable winning run.

"The momentum is with us but there are still loads of improvements to make," he said.

"We did well in parts against Tottenham but they managed to get through to our back line too easily on occasion so we need to cut that out.

"It is down to us really. If we win the rest of our games, obviously we will be champions and the way the results have panned out has been quite good.

"But it is not over. We still know Chelsea and Liverpool can go on unbeaten runs until the end of the season. We have to make sure we do as well as them."

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Aston Villa will attempt to consolidate their place in the top four at inconsistent Manchester City.

Villa have stumbled in recent weeks and were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Stoke on Sunday after blowing a two-goal lead in the final minutes.

But Norway striker John Carew expects Villa to bounce back and register their eighth successive away league win this season at Eastlands.

"We have a great chance as there is still a gap between ourselves and Arsenal," he said.

"We were sad for an hour after the Stoke game but then you look forward to the next challenge - and be confident that you can be successful.

"This team has done great things away from home this season and there is no reason why we cannot do it again."

Tottenham must recover quickly from the agony of losing the League Cup final as they host fellow strugglers Middlesbrough.

Harry Redknapp's team are only two points ahead of Middlesbrough, who currently fill the final relegation position, and midfielder Jermaine Jenas said: "We can take a lot out of the final, there was a lot of courage and effort, and if we put that in from now until the end of the season then we'll climb the league.

"We haven't got time to think about it. We have a very important game on Wednesday that we have to focus on and make sure we are ready."

          Not bad

Just got back, we lost to the mancs 1-2. went a goal up and should have scored a 2nd but sudenly we were 2-1 down, the 1st a deflection then the 2nd god knows whet taylor was thinking!!!

Anyway, before the game i really thought we'll get thumped big time and this game was the first to come on our way to the championship but now after watching the boys fight against what some say the best team in the world (mmmm, dont think so) i got a bit of hope.

Player of the match for me was Guttierezz, he ruled the left side and battie boy ronaldo was playing on the left wing as he had no chance against jona and enrique.

Anyway, next up is Hull away (6 pointer) with Owen 90% back and guthrie training again looks like we might have a chance.

          Howay the lads.

Does'nt look good does it? but keep ya chin up.
we have Chelsea at home next (0) points again unless we do something crazy.
After that the games start, we'll have Stoke away (6pointer) and if we lose that then we're 90% down, then all the other games like Portsmouth, boro & fulham all at home are winable plus i'm sure we'll pick a point here and there (i hope).

I tell you what, my heart says we'll stay up, my head says championship next season.
Leeds, Forest, QPR............. Here we come.

                      Shear sensation

                      Hang on to your hats

Wednesday morning brought confirmation from SkySports that an announcement would follow from Newcastle United later in the day regarding the Alan Shearer appointment.

This followed the same news channel airing news reports late on Tuesday evening that United's former number nine had agreed to take charge of first team affairs at SJP for the remaining eight games of the season.

A Thursday press conference has been mentioned - but as of 12 noon, nothing had been forthcoming direct from SJP or Shearer - despite multiple media claims of behind the scenes "club insider" type briefings.

The latest of those claims saw the name of Iain Dowie emerge as Shearer's assistant - the former striker having been a team mate of his back in their Southampton days.

Dowie has previously managed Oldham, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Coventry City and QPR - working in the media since being ousted at Loftus Road in October 2008.

Let's hope that if he is appointed that Dowie manages to find his way to SJP - when in charge of Charlton he was forced to abandon a pre-game jog around Newcastle when he got lost, he and his players being rescued from the side of a dual carriageway by a fleet of taxis!
Shearer becomes our fourth manager of a mad season and while he's totally unproven in the job, has more feeling for this club in his spit than Kinnear and Hughton combined.
He could scarcely do worse than them.

It does beg the question however of why now. If Shearer wasn't offered the chance to succeed Keegan, why not? And if he was offered it but turned it down, why now? It's not enough just to use sentimental reasons about keeping the club in the top-flight.

In possession of his UEFA 'A' and 'B' coaching badges, Shearer has yet to complete his Pro Licence qualification, but the apparently limited duration of his appointment falls within the 12 week temporary limit that is now in place.

The move comes just days after MD Derek Llambias rubbished claims that the club were set to replace Chris Hughton with a short-term appointment - but follows on from comments made by Joe Kinnear that suggested he was unlikely to make a touchline return in the near future.

Whatever demands Shearer has made of Ashley & Co. it seems a foregone conclusion that Dennis Wise has been shown the door - something that's been openly talked about on Tyneside for the last week or so.

PS: The intriguing possibility has emerged that the Shearer appointment is linked to a new investor in the club and he's been persuaded to take the position by someone other than Ashley and Llambias. The events of the coming days will doubtless prove or disprove that theory.

u know what.. i think a major reason why shearer took the job was because the BBC doesn't broadcast live footie no more - hence him staying on as a pundit there would be stupid.
