www.saintsfc.co.uk: "We have now received a couple of offers and the indications are another may follow. These have not been accepted or rejected at this stage."

Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool have also expressed interest in the youngster who can walk out on the club for a tribunal-set fee because he is only 16.

Walcott, a boyhood Arsenal supporter, is thought to prefer a move to the Gunners, but Chelsea's financial muscle will dwarf any offer on the table from other clubs.

Chelsea remained silent on speculation they were among the two clubs to have lodged a bid for the player and while the interest in the youngster continues to grow, Saints boss George Burley believes Walcott's best interests would be better served by staying put.

He added: "At the moment he is in the best place and doing tremendously well. He is playing regularly which is fantastic at his age.

"There has been a lot of talk but you have to consider the boy's future and I feel the best place for him right now is at Southampton. I have not spoken to him about his future but he is enjoying his training.

"I said from day one I want to keep him as long as possible and this is the best place for him to develop and learn. I have worked with a lot of good youngsters but I have never had a 16-year-old playing regular first-team football before."

Eriksson 'has To Go' - Whelan

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has called on the Football Association to sack Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Whelan, who has previously expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the England coach, is furious after the Swede's indiscreet weekend revelations to a 'fake Sheikh', who was actually an undercover Sunday newspaper reporter.

Despite the controversy, FA officials have insisted Eriksson retains their full support, but Whelan is adamant he should be ditched. He told the Manchester Evening News: "I have criticised Eriksson in the past, but there should be no way back from this. He has broken one of the game's golden rules. It is gross misconduct and the man has to go."

He added: "It is an absolute scandal, a disgrace. You simply do not expect the England manager to openly discuss his future plans and to air his views about what he thinks about players in his squad."

Soho Square chiefs are unlikely to give Whelan's views too much credence, or his suggestion Eriksson should be replaced by a joint managerial dream team of Paul Jewell and Stuart Pearce.

Meanwhile, the League Managers' Association has called for closure on the controversy surrounding Eriksson, their president.

A statement released by the LMA to PA Sport read: "In the light of recent media coverage, the League Managers' Association wishes to clarify its position.

"It is true that after a Sunday newspaper article about the England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, we discussed the situation.

"These observations will remain entirely confidential but we can confirm that very positive conversations have taken place with Howard Wilkinson, John Barnwell and FA chief executive Brian Barwick.

"The LMA wishes to reiterate its total support and backing for England in this year's 2006 World Cup. Our managers will continue to give Sven and the FA their complete support and backing as they have done consistently over many years."

              Mourinho Content Despite Draw

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United their win over Liverpool is nothing to get excited about.

Following Rio Ferdinand's late winner at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson's side were able to gain ground on the Premiership champions, who were held 1-1 at home by Charlton earlier in the day. But given that Chelsea remain 14 points clear with 15 games remaining, Mourinho felt he could still put United in their place with a few choice words.

He said: "The result of the game between Manchester United and Liverpool, if you go to speak with the winners they will be very happy after the game. But when they think how far ahead we are they will lose their smiles."

Chelsea had looked on course to maintain their 100-per-cent record in Premiership fixtures at Stamford Bridge this season when Eidur Gudjohnsen put them ahead in the 18th minute.

But Alan Curbishley's side had already enjoyed a previous visit to the ground, coming away with a Carling Cup penalty shoot-out victory in October.

They prospered again when substitute Marcus Bent, making his debut since a switch from Everton last week, headed an equaliser just before the hour mark.

The late sending off of Ricardo Carvalho for two bookable offences meant Chelsea finished with 10 men for the second game running following Arjen Robben's goal-celebration dismissal at Sunderland last week.

But Mourinho insisted: "We are a clean team. We played one-and-a-half years without one single red card. The team has a lot of discipline and clean players."

Charlton had gone on to lose six successive games after the earlier cup success before steadying themselves around Christmas, so Curbishley remained cautious.

He said: "I can't forget the run we had - it was painful - but a result like this goes a long way towards getting us back on track, although only time will tell."

                Gunners Make Room For Poom

Mart Poom has signed a permanent deal with Arsenal following his loan move from Sunderland.

The Estonia goalkeeper, signed by Arsene Wenger as back-up for Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia, was sent to Highbury on loan as part of the deal taking young full-back Justin Hoyte to Sunderland.

And the 33-year-old has made his move permanent, signing an undisclosed contract despite having failed to represent the Gunners' first team so far and only making four appearances for the reserve team.

He told the club's website, arsenal.com: "I'm delighted to have signed a permanent deal with Arsenal and am really pleased that Arsene Wenger and the coaches at the club have shown faith in me.

"I'm really enjoying it here at Arsenal and will continue to work hard in training, so that I am ready to hopefully feature in the first team in the near future."

                    Walcott Deal Is 'bullet-proof'

Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein believes the Gunners have a "bullet proof" deal to ensure teenage striker Theo Walcott will not be snatched from their grasp before he turns professional next month.

Walcott cannot sign a professional contract with Gunners until his 17th birthday on March 16, and technically the England youth international could elect to further his career elsewhere, although that scenario seems highly unlikely given his clear commitment to Arsenal.

The Gunners' vice-chairman said: "Until a player signs a professional contract, a club is exposed to a certain extent. But in order to make sure we had a bullet-proof deal - there were no less than 10 sets of documents and a total of 84 signatures. It is the most I've ever known in any one transfer."

Dein added: "Everybody had to sign so many documents because we had to be protected and we have done everything in our power to make sure we are protected."

The Arsenal vice-chairman would not like to contemplate what might happen should another club try to scupper their agreement with the 16-year-old by making a multi-million pound offer.

"It would be a very ugly and messy arbitration - and who knows what would come out of that. But it won't happen," said Dein.

"I believe in the quality of the boy - and his parents and the agent, I believe, have gone about it properly. We will have a four-and-a-half year contract.

"Initially a professional contract is two-and-a-half, then there will be two years on top of that."
