Football Federation Australia's boss Ben Buckley has had meetings with the leading candidates including Gerard Houllier, Guus Hiddink, Dick Advocaat and Leo Beenhakker, but it is understood his preference is with former Germany manager Kilnsmann.

"We have spoken to a number of people in recent weeks and we'd like to have someone in place by the end of this year," said Buckley.

Klinsmann exceeded all expectations when he guided Germany to a surprise third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup.

Shortly after the World Cup, the 42 year-old officially announced that he would step down as Germany's manager after two years in charge citing personal reasons.

He has spent most of his time since then in the United States with his family, but it is believed he is interested in a return to football management.

Despite speculation of a new manager being appointed, current boss Graham Arnold is expected to remain in the role at least until after the Asian Cup in August.

after Australia's success in the World Cup with a world class coach in Guus Hiddink the Aussies are looking for top notch coaches from now on.

So be suprised to find someone like Houllier taking charge by the end of the year.

The Aussies have the money and their willing to spend it for their footballing infrastructure.

It's more than just money. It's also great organization, and genuine sympathy which leads to a lack of corruption.

Australia is a world class sporting nation, arguably the best in the world.

This is one sport their behind in compared to world standards but they are catching up very rapidly!

I've always said if it were'nt for AFL and NRL holding Australia's football back I have no doubt Australia would be amongst the top ten footballing nations in the world.

I think its great that they've entered Asia because it will improve us also and make IFF obliged to keep up with the aussies in footballing progress.

Australia in my opnion is a sleeping giant in football!

If Klinsmann turned down tempting offers from both the USA and Mexico then I really can't see him coming down to Australia.

Plus hiring Klinsmann by himself is not enough, he needs a competent assistant by his side, Joachim Loew was the main reason why Klinsi was able to do well with Germany.

I think it would be better for Aus to have a coach who is centred in Europe rather than the US.

                            yep...

Louis van Gaal has admitted an interest in taking control of Australia, but is unsure they can fulfil his desire to win the World Cup.

Van Gaal, who has enjoyed success through his career at club level, feels he has unfinished business at international level after failing to enjoy any fortune with the Dutch national side.

The 55-year-old is contracted to AZ Alkmaar until 2008, but is considering a move back into international football ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

"I'm always interested in a good job and national coach of Australia is an interesting job," Van Gaal said in an interview with the Australian broadcasting station SBS.

"It's interesting, but I want to win the World Cup and there are countries with a higher level then the Australian squad.

"The level of Australia is not as high as for example Spain or Argentina."
