Football Federation Australia's boss Ben Buckley has had meetings with the leading candidates including Gerard Houllier, Guus Hiddink, Dick Advocaat and Leo Beenhakker, but it is understood his preference is with former Germany manager Kilnsmann.
"We have spoken to a number of people in recent weeks and we'd like to have someone in place by the end of this year," said Buckley.
Klinsmann exceeded all expectations when he guided Germany to a surprise third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup.
Shortly after the World Cup, the 42 year-old officially announced that he would step down as Germany's manager after two years in charge citing personal reasons.
He has spent most of his time since then in the United States with his family, but it is believed he is interested in a return to football management.
Despite speculation of a new manager being appointed, current boss Graham Arnold is expected to remain in the role at least until after the Asian Cup in August.
