For Italian fans: Totti will play for Azzurri.

The Italian federation announced this evening that Francesco Totti will return to play with the Azzurri only after the summer break.

"Francesco Totti will return with the national team starting next September, when he will have finished the rehabilitation program that he has been undergoing in these months to fully recover from the injury he suffered before the World Cup, an event the player didn’t want to miss in order to give his contribution to Italy,” read the statement that appeared on the Azzurri’s official website this evening.

Totti had to get screws put in his ankle after the injury suffered in February of last season to allow him to recover in time for the 2006 World Cup.

He then decided not to remove the screws with another operation after the World Cup, so he could help Roma in the current campaign.

The Giallorosso captain is expected to take the operation during the upcoming summer break.

Italy boss Donandoni was hoping to count on the on-form Totti for next week's Euro Qualifier against Scotland.

In the last months the Roma captain has produced great performances for his club despite the presence of the now 'infamous' screws in his ankle.

With the federation's annoucement, the irritating and media frenzied Totti-Donadoni saga that has been going on since the end of the World Cup is finally over.

Good news, even though I don't care for the Italian NT, Totti is far too good not to be in it when healthy and willing. Drama and Totti go hand in hand, you take the good with the bad.
