Reaction to Borussia Monchengladbach v Bayern:

    Karl-Heinz Rummenigge:
We’re guilty of carelessness. We were comfortably in the lead and had the chances to make it three or even four. At the end of the day, we’ve only taken a point when it simply should have been three – it’s a criticism I have to make. It doesn’t mean we were arrogant, but we were a little too sure of ourselves. From the 70th minute onwards, we didn’t invest enough to wrap up the result. It’s a bad day at the office where we’ve dropped vital points. We drew 3-3 with Bochum at home, and here it’s finished 2-2. If we hadn’t dropped these four points, we’d definitely have been top of the league tonight. These are the matches we simply have to win.

Going home with only a point is extremely frustrating. We wanted to stop the gap to the top getting wider, but we’ll have to correct it next week instead.

    Mark van Bommel:
I don’t think we caved in. It was two separate incidents. The first came from a corner, and the second was caused by the first. It’s always hard if your opponents pull one back when you’re away from home. We played very well until conceding the first. I don’t think we lost concentration. If you analyse the game as a whole, we were much the better team, and we’ve stupidly thrown away two points.

just like favre in berlin...he didn't get results in his first year and said that he needs at least a year so that the team can get used to his methods...and now they are 4th...klinsi also said he needs time

Gladbach keeper and former FCB man Uwe Gospodarek said the result “felt like a win,” but the reaction from the Bayern camp was at the opposite end of the spectrum. “It’s infuriating from our perspective. It’s made us look really stupid. That was extremely careless. We can’t be throwing away a win like that. It’s just like our 3-3 draw with Bochum. The four dropped points would have sent us top of the table,” Klinsmann reflected.

The stalemate in Monchengladbach put an end to Bayern’s run of five Bundesliga victories on the trot. Rivals Leverkusen and Hoffenheim both won their home matches and are now three points clear of Klinsmann’s men, who let slip a two-goal lead for the third time this term. “We have to point the finger at ourselves for coming away with a draw. It’s a match we should have won,” said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

remains a mystery, not least among the chief protagonists. “You’ve got to be able to protect a 2-0 lead to the end. We weren’t focused or smart enough to score a third,” lamented Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger. “We were in control and we made chances, but we didn’t kill the game. It’s extremely frustrating and shouldn’t be happening to a top team,” complained Philipp Lahm after a decent comeback showing.

Canadian Rob Friend (79) and US international Michael Bradley (81) headed the goals to secure an unlikely point for the home side. “We lost our cool and ran around like headless chickens instead of holding firm. The stadium went berserk after they pulled one back,” commented Miroslav Klose. “I think we lost concentration. Maybe we thought we’d done our job after going 2-0 up, although to be honest, everything pointed in that direction. But at the end of the day, we’ve paid heavily for that attitude,” offered Rummenigge.

The chairman described the result as “a bad day at the office. It’s a minor setback, but it’s unimportant. We’ll keep pushing over the coming weeks and pressurise Leverkusen and Hoffenheim.” Indeed, Bayern’s pre-Christmas fate lies in their own hands. The Bavarians travel to leaders Bayer in two weeks’ time, and entertain surprise package Hoffenheim just a few days after that.

“I still believe we’re heading in the right direction,” observed Klinsmann, “we’re aiming to make good a few more points before Christmas, and set the seal on our Champions League campaign. And I can still well imagine we’ll be top of the league by the halfway point.”

England too good for Schweini and Co

Nine Bayern stars featured in international friendlies across Europe on Wednesday evening, producing an overall positive record of three wins, two draws and one defeat. The only Munich man to add his name to the scoresheet on the night was Italy goal-getter Luca Toni.

Germany ended an overwhelmingly positive 2008 on a disappointing note with a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals England in front of a capacity 74,244 crowd at the Berlin Olympic stadium.

That wasn’t our best day,“ Bastian Schweinsteiger acknowledged afterwards. “England were tactically clever, we never really got going, and we didn’t play good football either,“ continued the Bayern man after his 62nd international appearance, in which he took over the captain’s armband from Miroslav Klose after the striker was substituted at half-time. Lukas Podolski, the third Munich star to feature in the match, replaced Mario Gomez after 57 minutes, but shared his team-mates’ inability to significantly alter the course of the game.
