Totti reflects on 'saddest night of sporting career'

It surely was a sad night for Roma in particular and Italian soccer in general..But it is nice to see that he is not a sore loser and gives credit to ManU (as he should) unlike my friend Viva (who lost the bet and is refusing to fulfill his obligations)..

Roma captain Francesco Totti is struggling to come to terms with his team's humiliating defeat at Manchester United on Tuesday night.


The Eternal City giants were swept away by Sir Alex Ferguson's team in a 7-1 defeat, knocking them out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage in resounding fashion.


'It is the saddest night of my sporting career,' admitted Totti.

'I had never conceded seven goals in a Champions League match before. Each shot they took, they found the target.'

Having taken a 2-1 lead in the opening leg in Rome, few could have expected that the Italians would be defeated in such a manner.

Totti blamed his team's poor start as the reason behind their shocking defeat, with Roma 3-0 down after 10 minutes.

'We have conceded three goals in nine minutes,' continued Totti. 'We tried to react but in those conditions it was really difficult.'

The result was also a hammer blow for the 5000 Giallorossi fans that travelled with the team to Manchester.

'I have to thank our travelling fans,' said Totti. 'They showed a lot of heart by coming here to support us.

'Unfortunately, we have come across a better team.'

Totti had hoped to dominate the game, but was overshadowed by Manchester's Cristiano Ronaldo, who stole the limelight.

Ronaldo scored two goals and was a menace all night as grabbed two goals and continued to torment Roma as he hunted his hat-trick.

'Before the game I said that Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player,' said Totti.

'I hoped that we could have limit his play like we did in the opening game, but he has found every punch.'

The Italy World Cup winner is hoping that in the near future he will have a chance to avenge this loss.

'I would love to have another opportunity in the future to play another game like this one,' he said.

'But with a different result. I would really want to give something back to our fans.'

While I am all for Totti failure, I doubt he was 100% fit last night, plus I do not see any reason why dumbass Spaletti started Vucinic over Perotta. That all being said Totti is still a top class footballer but... a dirty **** at the same time.

Maybe Totti wasnt fit, but that said what were the other 10 players doing on the pitch? That's no excuse of not being up to the mark, but can you really blame them ? United were unstoppable.

I feel pity for Totti he took his team all the way to the QFs (first time in Roma's history) and to see his team getting mauled in such a way, more like some club team from the non-leagues...it will hurt any man who supports Roma or plays for Roma.

I predict that there are going to be major changes in Roma's management and coaching after this humuliation....I watched the game again last night and there was nothing Roma could do to stop getting raped by ManU.

Well regardless of what happened last night, I dont think Luciano Spaletti's job is under question. He's a good manager, no doubt, and I would still keep him in order to bring stability in Roma - which they are at the moment because of him - now Roma should try to at least to take the Serie A title race as far as they can go for Inter and then be focused on beating Inter in the Coppa Italia.

Perrotta was suspended. but Mirko was awful.Anyway wish Tavano wasnt cuptied he scored a great goal against Catania at the weekend.

Spalleti is easily the best coach, look at Udineese before and after and now Roma, playing some of the best football in Europe UEFA CL QF, 2nd in Serie A. With little or no purchases and a few players on loan.(Tavano,Wilhelmson, Pizarro)

you are right Aryaan jan. Roma only has 4 excellent players (Totti, Perotta, Mancini and De Rossi) the rest are good or okay. But look how amazing they play.

I have no doubt that this Roma will be among the favorites next year in CL. This year was just a great experience. Spaletti wanted to give some experience to the youngsters in the last 10 minutes of the game, that's why he subbed De Rossi out. Roma doesn't have Manchesters money, that's why they can't buy great players.

I dont understand why they have a Brazilian keeper when italy is full of great goal keepers. Also the defense was terrible too, they gave too much space to Man U. You can't give space to english teams, thats the biggest no no.



Also, you gotta admit Man U was very very lucky. Its like every shot they took went in, i bet its going to back fire on them in the next round.

Third, it looks like you have memory loss so I will repeat for you. My first team is Real, no doubt, but I also love to watch ManU games and follow their progress. They are an exciting team to watch. I have liked Rooney and R. Ronaldo since 4 years ago, do you remember Euro 2004?
Fourth, you lost the bet even though you thought you are going to win 1000% (thats why you bet about goals difference and not which team qualifies). I dont even know why you bothered to post on this thread. You have three terrible comments. 1- Goalie couldnt do anything in more than half the goals. 2- ManU caused Roma defense to open up by playing one touch or two touch soccer, moving the ball around quickly, accurate passing, etc. Its not like Roma was giving them space. 3- There was no luck in ManU's win or goals. As a matter of fact, de rossi goal was lucky, go and see it again. He was not even looking at the goal when he took his shot. Nonetheless it was a beautiful goal.
