Liverpool find him first and tried to buy him a while back but Man utd have an agreement with Sporting Lisbon as Feeder club and so gave first option on Utd

Apparently it is said that the Liverpool management did not want to buy him when he was 16 years old saying he was too young and needed time to develop as a proper footballer despite Gerard Houllier's efforts to get him - I guess he was a proper 'showboat' kid there and that didnt seem to go well with Liverpool and other clubs as a mature team player is more needed. But Fergie didnt let that come in his way

Bear in mind it is Sporting that has developed the likes of Figo, Simao, Quaresma, Ronaldo and now of course Nani.
