    Peruzzi and Costacurta's fairwell

This weekend a lot of players retierd. On top of them, there were Angello Peruzzi, Alesandro Costacurta and Mehmet Scholl.

    Great players, great professionals.

Peruzzi (Lazio): Only played for 6 minutes as Delio Rossi wanted him to receive the applauses of the entire Olimpico stadium for his final home game of his career. A great professional, will be missed by everyone.

Costacurta (Milan): Same situation of Peruzzi. His final match in front of his own fans was also enriched with the goal he scored from the penalty spot. A true example for all up and coming defenders.

    Mehmet Scholl:Club
Scholl's career began at Karlsruher SC, his hometown and only other professional club, before Bayern signed him as a 21-year-old in 1992. The club's longest-serving player, Scholl has now won eight domestic titles in Munich and scored five goals as they took the 2001 UEFA Champions League. A winner in the 1996 UEFA Cup final, the latter years of his career have been plagued by injuries, with the 2002/03 season decribed by Scholl as "appalling" while a back problem meant he started only one Bundesliga game in 2003/04. Felix Magath's arrival as coach has marked an upturn in Scholl's fortunes and, having accepted that he could no longer play for 90 minutes, he shone in a 'joker role' as Bayern won consecutive domestic doubles in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Still a masterful passer and dribbler, he is under contract until 2007.
    National team
A vital component of the Germany side that won EURO '96™, Scholl's international career was otherwise restricted to 36 caps as he missed the 1994, 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups through injury. At the age of 31, the first player of Turkish descent to play for Germany bowed out of the national team and resisted calls to return for the 2006 World Cup.
    Did you know?
Scholl is passionate about skittles. He was a national bronze medallist at junior level and is a member of Bayern's skittles club.

      Alesandro Costacurta:

An AC Milan defensive legend, Alessandro Costacurta continues to offer experience to the Rossoneri back line and is as reliable as ever when called upon.

      Club
Costacurta has collected 20 major honours in his career with the great Milan side of Arrigo Sacchi and its later incarnation under Fabio Capello, including seven Serie A titles, four European Champion Clubs' Cup and two UEFA Super Cups. His one season away from the club came in 1986/87 when he played 30 times for Monza Calcio in Serie C1; otherwise Costacurta has remained a Milan stalwart. Suspensions in 1994 caused him to miss the finals of both the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup, but in 2003 he lifted Europe's premier club trophy. In 2003/04 he joined Paolo Maldini in establishing a new club record of seven championship successes and despite turning 40 during the 2005/06 campaign Costacurta was as solid as ever. Lending his experience in 15 Serie A appearances – many of them in an unusual right-back role - he also played three games in the UEFA Champions League, including Milan's 0-0 draw at eventual winners FC Barcelona in the semi-final second leg. In January 2006 he decided to postpone his retirement by signing a new one-year contract with the Rossoneri.
      National team
Born in 1966, he was something of a latecomer to international football and only made his debut in late 1991 against Norway. Costacurta made 59 appearances for Italy prior to his retirement in 1998, having played in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups as well as EURO '96™.
      Did you know?
      Costacurta is nicknamed 'Billy'.
