HANOI: A Vietnamese man was killed in a road accident as he drove his motorbike through the streets of Hanoi to celebrate his country's Asian Cup victory over the United Arab Emirates, police said on Monday. The man, who was not identified, died late on Sunday when he crashed into a traffic sign. His male passenger was in a serious condition in hospital, police said.
Residents of the capital poured into the streets on Sunday after Vietnam's stunning 2-0 win over the Gulf Cup champions before a raucous home crowd.
Young people, many of them on motorbikes, waved banners and the country's red-and-gold flag, cheering "Vietnam - victory!" or "Vietnam - champion!" But police said the celebrations were generally calm.
Goals from Huynh Quang Thanh and Le Cong Vinh sparked wild celebrations for Vietnam, who are making their first appearance in the finals since South Vietnam competed in the 1960 finals and lost all three matches, to hosts South Korea, Israel and Taiwan.
"We were a little lucky but we deserved to win," Vietnam's Austrian coach coach Alfred Riedl said. "This has already caused a sensation but it's only one win."
