Research the topic, but don't be fooled by statistics.

    Think of what you've seen.

And remember a left back has different roles than a Central Defender.

Both legends no matter who gets the most votes on this thread.

Absolutely - it is not merely about defending of course. However, it is not solely about attacking flair either. Who has the better balance of both qualities is the question.

there is no left back like roberto carlos. how he attacks like hes a left wing forward while doing his defensive duties is amazing.

maldini may be better at defending slightly, but roberto carlos has the edge in every other aspect. now before you say were talking about defenders... exactly. we are talking about left defenders who sometimes have as much offensive duties as defensive ones, like roberto carlos.

heres a list of what who is better at:

        roberto carlos:

        stamina
        speed
        crossing
        shooting
        freekicks
        offence
        dribbling
        passing

        maldini:

        defending

Roberto Carlos is a better attacker, Maldini is a better defender

both are superb, both are legends

there should not be any argument...r.carlos was the best left back ever...maldini was a great defender, but roberto carlos is a great left back, which as you said, is different from the central defensive duties.

Robero Carlos hands down, he was everything you would want in a left back.

R.C is probably the best left back the world had ever seen.
Maldini undoubtedly a legend, but ill go with R.C!

The only thing Carlos ever did was create the modern Wing Back. Which i am greatful for cause it revalutionised the game.

however the better player was Maldini. He was a solid rock who did the job he was given with a minimum fuss.

R.Carlos was a liability at the worst of times and the best example was the 98 World cup when he was at fault for both Zidane goals. There were many times when he was caught out of position.

R.Carlos may have been the more exciting player but Maldini was by far the better Left Back or Left "defender" as it is known as.

Pauolo maldini was also a CB but even as LB I picked him over Carlos.....
Carlos comes forward way too much and he has also given so many "sooties" in big tournoments like vs. France in 98 and again vs. france in 06..
but maldini is a better man marker and has a better defensive mind

                        roberto carlos, most definately.
maldini's good, but roberto carlos is the best leftback we've seen, in my opinion.

Roberto Carlos is a lot more flash than substance. Maldini is the greatest LB by far I would not consider R.Carlos top 3, however he certainly did entertain me more than any other LB.
