Other than political reasons, the US has the most paid and looked after development program on the planet, obviously because their rich. However because the culture is more into profit rather than passion, there is no love built on the national team.

of course there are passionate fans like yourself and others in the US, but the whole style of play and what not, doesn't reflect what other countries have done for many years.

A good example is Beckham being brought in. this tactic obviously wasn't to make LA galaxy stronger for 250 million dollars, it was to increase the television ratings and catch up to American Football whose television ratings are the strongest for any sport in the US.

USA is the biggest disappointment in soccer. everything is set but they cant even win the world cup once. they should be at least top 5.
