It’s been a deal years in the making, but finally, one of mixed martial arts’ unquestioned greats – former PRIDE Champion Wanderlei Silva - will be returning to the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Octagon this December for the first time in over seven years to take on the best 205-pound fighters in the world.

“Many fighters have a dream of fighting for the UFC, and as a champion for six years in Japan, my dream has always been to have the UFC belt,” said Silva. “Today, I’m one step closer to this goal.”

“As crazy as this sounds, this is the pinnacle of my seven year career in this company,” said UFC President Dana White. “I’m so excited to have this guy under contract. He grabbed my arm and looked me in the eyes like one of his pre-fight staredowns and he said ‘I’m gonna fight so good for you, you’re gonna see the best fights ever from Wanderlei Silva.’”

The signing of Silva, which took place in the Zuffa offices in Las Vegas Friday afternoon, is the culmination of years of pursuit and hard work by White, who weathered a series of ups and downs to get the Brazilian bomber in the UFC, where potential matchups with the likes of former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell await.

The 31-year old Silva, known by fight fans as “The Axe Murderer” for his ultra-aggressive style and finishing ability, began his career almost 11 years ago in his native Brazil, fighting in Vale Tudo bouts that pushed him to the
    ad
limit as he honed the skills that would soon make him one of the most feared fighters on the planet.

In 1998, Silva would make his UFC debut against Vitor Belfort, and he would fight two more times in the Octagon (including a 2000 bout against Tito Ortiz).

But it was in the PRIDE organization that the legend of Silva was truly born, and after his debut in 1999, he met great success by winning the organization’s middleweight championship and defeating the likes of current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson (twice), Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba (three times), Ricardo Arona, Hidehiko Yoshida, and Kazuyuki Fujita, while engaging in some of the most memorable fights in MMA history.

“This guy is a real fighter,” said White. “He reminds me of Chuck Liddell, and he’s the kind of fighter that all fight fans love to see fight. He’s a gunslinger. He will get in harm’s way to inflict damage and pain. This guy comes out like a speeding train and never stops. He goes for the finish, he likes to knock people out, and I just think he’s going to bring so much excitement to the UFC, I feel like I’m going to jump out of my skin.”

Well-rested after his February PRIDE fight against Dan Henderson, Silva (31-7-1) now looks forward to the next chapter in his career in the UFC.

“I’m gonna work hard to give a great show for the fans and I want to thank God for this opportunity,” said Silva, who counts the key elements of his style as raw aggression, emotion, and intensity.

He also wants to send a message to prospective foes.

“I want to issue a warning to the other fighters out there: you need to train hard, because “The Axe Murderer” is here.”

A date and opponent for Silva’s return will be announced at a later date.

Great fighter, unfortunately the UFC and its rules are designed to help wrestlers, the UFC officials have been pushing some athletic state commissions to allow knees on grounded opponents, which I personally think is MUCH needed, which will then act as a deterrent to wrestlers who have lazy shots.

Silva is only 30, but he's about 40 in MMA years, I don't know if he can handle the larger, stronger fighters at 205 without those new rules instated.

There are a few fighters still without contracts mainly in the HW divison, one being the greatest fighter period, Fedor, and the other being the only man I think whos capable of dethroning him, Josh Barnett.

dana white is being a fool with fedor...the thing thats keeping his ink is sambo... fedor wants to compete in a once yearly sambo tournament, which is apparently a big deal in russia...and dana isnt allowing it...i seriously hope a fighter like fedor doesnt sign with K-1 or something.

Yea, it doesn't look like it's happening. Fedor most probably will go to K1 HERO'S. I think HERO'S is going to become the new pride.

The light heavy weight devision of the UFC is unbelievably packed. You got Wandy, Rampage, Henderson, Shogun, Chuck, all really really top contenders. It's going to be so competitive.

Anyways, I 100% agree with Muradistan. Great point about kneeing a downed opponant. The UFC really has some stupid rules man. No knees, no soccer kicks, no stomps, but elbows are aloud. Elbows are stupid, they just open cuts....

It looks like Henderson's team have picked up on Jackson's lil (big) weakness with knees, and 100% will exploit. But I'd love to see if Jackson has sorted it out. It's a real shame... He just kinda gets scared, covers up and gets clinched, and he doesn't know what to do about it. I hope someone helps him He's a top fighter and shouldn't be exploited that easily.

Rampage has a lot of talent, mentally I think he can be intimidated, but not by Henderson. Silva scared the shit out of Rampage before both encounters and you could tell Rampage was never as willing as Silva to slug. Anyways Hendo is one the greatest fighters I've seen, he's got wins over some of the greatest Brazilian fighters in MMA.

Great match-up, I'm hoping Rampage wins because he's younger and far more entertaining.

Looks like Wandy may have his fight in UFC79! Him and Chuck are probably going to get 2 easy opponents to further hype the fight and show the ufcfans what Wandy is all about.

If that's the case, Shogun will probably get a title shot before Wandy and Chuck.

Shogun will probably challenge Rampage/Hendo, then Wandy/Chuck will challenge Rampage/Hendo/Shogun.

Who's gonna have the belt at the end of this?

Good Q, maybe none of them. Theres Lyoto Machida who's got great skills, and the very entertaining Brandon Vera who will most likely drop to 205 at one point.

Personally I think Silva is the best LHW, but in a cage, wrestlers and GnP have such a distinct advantage especially with knees to a downed opponent being illegal, in the end I believe Shogun will have the title, and Silva will be #1 contender.

They will never fight each other though. And I was thinking why Vera doesn't drop. He could easily make it to 205...
