Sir Alex Ferguson believes winning the UEFA Champions League this season would be a fitting tribute to the players that lost their lives in the Munich disaster.
Manchester United begin their bid to win a third European Cup against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday.
February will mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich plane crash and Ferguson is looking to commemorate those that died by lifting the trophy in May.
"I think it would, without question, act as an incentive in a way, but more than that it would be a great tribute from the present day players to the players of the past," said Ferguson.
"We won the Cup in '68 and the Munich tragedy happened in 1958. That was 50 years ago now, and that's a long time, and it would be very fitting if we did it."
