Riquelme is the main fulcrum of any team he has played for and uses him to the fullest. Boca Juniors, Villareal, and Argentina have all made him the core of their attacks, and quite frankly he exceeds in that role by slowing the game down to his pace, and some good ball holding and passes later goal. Sadly the reason he was poor at Barca was because he wasnt given the creative attention he wanted given the stars around him, and that didnt help.
Pirlo is a mix and match. On one hand he is supposed a defensive midfielder for Milan and Italy yet he needs the physical robustness of Gattuso, Seedorf and Ambrosini to dictate play and that's where his vision and passing are the key, although Milan have relied a lot on Shevchenko and now Kaka for their attacks so Pirlo isnt the centre of attention as Riquelme is for his team.
Yet both excel at their roles, and are some wicked passers and dead ball specialistssigpic

Nice summary Suprah m8,
Riquelme's free kicks were better imo, but who is a better player? Hard one, like Suprah was saying I agree.
Riquelme is more of a No "10" if you will, and he needs to be the centre of attention and the game HAS to be played through him and he has to be the Conductor of whichever team he plays at to succeed.
Meanwhile Pirlo, is a player who is less independant and is more of a TEAM player if you like, he uses his team mates to play exceptionally well and that is Pirlo's key, to get his team mates attributes and use it to make himself brilliant.
Both awesome players.

A 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-1-2 is a formation someone like Juan Roman Riquelme would thrive in and lead his team from the front. The only thing is, the team should do exactly as Riquelme wants and desires, and quite frankly it works out just fine. Just ask Boca Juniors when the again won Copa Libertadores again or Villareal that reached the Champions League semis two seasons back and did so well in La Liga given their own resources. Riquelme is the man.sigpic

good analysis from you guys
I see Pirlo more of a laid back play maker that can put in dangerous deliveries in the air, and deliver every free kick well.
Although personally I see Riquelme as a better individual player, only because he is unmatched at his style, he can make beautiful cutting balls and is like a wizard in midfield in terms of confusing the opposition.
Both had good goals over the weekend, but Riquelme was very individualistic in winning that game for Argentina, even though Messi and Tevez had some good plays. The Worker-communist Party of Iran (WPI)

I still dont see how some people think that Riquelme is overrated. This guy is an amazing player. The same goes for Pirlo.
In this case, Pirlo's freekick should have easily been saved by the keeper, but he thought that it was going to be flicked in by another Italian player. It had nothing to do with the curve on the ball.
Riquelme's freekicks were just beautifull. He almost had a third one in that game also. The guy is pure genius.

Reason being, That's not his style yaara. His style is CONTROLLING and DICTATING play at his own rather leisurely pace shugal mela to allow his team mates to get into some good positions and space for his ever deadly through balls and passes.
He is an old-school type playmaker that the whole team relies on and he delivers time and time again, but he does it at his own terms and conditions as he reads the game really well when all the opposition want to close him down and mark him out of the game.sigpic
