afc player of the year goes to...

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has named the Saudi football player Yasser al-Qahtani as the best player of the year.

Iraq's football team was also voted as the team of the year at the AFC Awards ceremony in Sydney last night, the ABC News website reported.

Al-Qahtani, nicknamed "The Sniper" is the fourth player from his country to win the accolade in the 14 years that it has been handed out.

The Saudi player beat off the challenge of Iraqi stars Nashat Akram and Younis Mahmoud to win the award.

Iraq's football team was hailed because of its players' exploits which led to winning the Asian Cup for the first time.

Uzbekistan's Rauf Inileev won coach of the year and former UEFA president Lennart Johansson received a special "Diamond of Asia" award for his services to Asian football.

joke, the iraqis were much better but the award is a big jokes for the last 3 editions anyway - he now prolongs the great list of Al Montashari and Khalfan Khalfan al Khalfan lol. I don't even bother to put an article about it on frontpage.

One year this Korean dude and Ali Karimi were elliminated because they were playing in Europe and coudn't make it to the award cerimony. That is so unfair it's not their fault that the clubs won't relase them to an award cerimony.

AFC blows with all do respect to Qatani they just lost all of their credibility with me. They can nomiante a gay gorilla for all I care because it just doesn't matter. Nobody takes the AFC player of the year award seriously anymore.

how does younis deserve it? both of them were joint top scorers, even though they were both captains too, if anything yasser had a tougher way to lead since they played tougher teams than iraq did, and he scored more crucial goals then younis, the only goal that was actually really important was the winner in the final

his other 3 were 2 against vietnam where anyone else couldve score and 1 against thailand, again, bravo??

yasser scored in the semis, quarters and crucial group matches

Yasser played in Saudi Arabia man, Its totally different to bid the odds and come as underdogs and win a tournament than just play a good part in a giant team and still fail.

that "payback" video shows some really dirty play from both teams

anybody got footage from a Bahrain-Qatar game?

and masoud jan, iraq played with thailand, a newly introduced australia, oman, vietnam, a weakened korean squad which it was a penalty win (might as well flip a coin). the only good team they beat was saudi and it was a slim margin victory, plus it was on the only day saudi actually played BAD in that tourny. While on saudi's way to the final they had to face Korea, Bahrain, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Japan then iraq. so the underdog thing doesnt really come into a huge play for iraq since they didnt play very top teams....

Yasser Al-Qahtani had made comments before the game that the cup was in the bag after they beat Japan. He said he'd bag 10 goals vs. Iraq if he wanted to.

After the game he ended up with 10 boots in his mouth. He had it coming.
