    Liverpool quick on the draw
    (FIFA.com) Wednesday 23 January 2008

In many ways, football is a simple game: the team that scores the most goals, wins. Yet in every week, in every league and in every single match, there are intriguing statistical sub-plots that help make the beautiful game the fascinating spectacle that it is.

That's why, starting from today, we at FIFA.com are kicking off a weekly look at the numbers behind the results, analysing football's biggest winners and losers in the week just past. This, the first of our round-ups, is sure to make enjoyable reading for fans of Luxembourg's F91 Dudelange and WAPDA of the Pakistani top flight, but fans of New Zealand's Canterbury United should perhaps look away now...

45 was the total number of goals scored in 16 Campeonato Nacional de Futbol matches in Cuba over the weekend, the highest of any of the 174 top flights analysed.

23 is the unbeaten streak currently being protected by Pakistan's WAPDA, who have still to taste defeat in season 2007/08. Remarkably, however, the Lahore outfit are still playing catch-up in the Pakistani Premier League, sitting two points behind defending champions Pakistan Army due largely to the fact that nine of WAPDA's 23 matches have ended in a draw. As for the team with the second-longest unbeaten streak in club football, that distinction belongs to the ever-impressive Inter Milan, who came from behind to beat Parma 3-2 at the weekend, preserving their seven-point advantage over Roma at the top of Serie A and extending their run without defeat to 19 matches.

15 is the number of successive wins that Luxembourg's runaway league leaders F91 Dudelange have chalked up since the beginning of the 2007/08 Fortis League season. So impressive has the southern outfit's form been, in fact, that Racing Luxembourg, their nearest rivals, lie fully 17 points behind in second place.

11 is the less welcome streak currently being endured at the other end of the spectrum by Olympique Moka. The Mauritian outfit currently languish eight points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table with a miserable record of two goals for and 37 against.

8 was the margin by which New Zealand Football Championship outfit and FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2007 participants Waitakere United defeated Canterbury United away in Christchurch on 20 January. The 9-1 result, which was the biggest winning margin of the past week, also helped equal their club record of six consecutive wins in the NZFC and set a new goal-scoring record for a match in the Kiwi top flight, eclipsing the previous eight-goal record that Waitakere themselves shared. And what was head coach Chris Milicich's post-match reaction? "We haven't played that well". Some people are clearly never satisfied. One can only imagine how Milicich's Canterbury counterpart must have felt.

4.75 is the number of goals averaged in the NZFC over the weekend, the highest of any the 174 leagues covered. Auckland City currently lead Waitakere by one point, with Team Wellington three points further back in third.

4 is the number of successive draws that Liverpool have chalked up in the Premier League in the wake of tieing 2-2 with Aston Villa on Monday. Manchester City, Wigan Athletic and Middlesbrough have all taken a share of the spoils from the Anfield outfit since 30 December. It has proved a damaging sequence, allowing their Merseyside rivals Everton to seize fourth position, and had it not been for Peter Crouch's 88th-minute equaliser on Monday, the Villains would also have leapfrogged Rafael Benitez's faltering side in the standings.

3 was the number of goals scored by hat-trick heroes Benjamin Mwaruwari and Bart van den Eede of Portsmouth and Westerlo respectively at the weekend. The Zimbabwean striker claimed his treble in Pompey's 3-1 win over the English Premier League's bottom side, Derby County, and took his own tally for the season to 12. Van den Eede, meanwhile, scored a hat-trick in Westerlo's thumping 7-2 home win over FC Brussels.

A bit of both (mostly the Pakistan being mentioned part)

My dad once worked in WAPDA as well as being part of the Pakistan Army for 20 odd years

WAPDA or 'Water and Power Development Authority', like most government departments in Pakistan, has its own sports teams that form the main lifeline of domestic sports and sportsmen in Pakistan. Athletics & ball sports teams are common for such large government organisations.

WAPDA has without a doubt the most well-organised sports department in its running in Pakistan.

Here is the actual Ryan Giggs goal from the 99 FA Cup semi final against Arsenal Saeed jaan. It was a magical year winning the Treble.

As far as WAPDA goes, their key players have been striker Arif Mehmood (20 goals so far in around 24 games) and Zulfiqar Ali Shah (19 in the same amount of games) and with only 2 games left to play, WAPDA are currently top of the table drawn on points with Army but with much better goal difference.

Strangely enough, WAPDA vs Army will be the final game of the season, so if it remains same on points, this game will be a decider. I am rooting for WAPDA who can give a better performance than Army in the AFC President's Cup which Army has been pathetic in two years in a row

That said, mentioning WAPDA in same breath as Inter Milan made me shit my pants laughing and pride

                    Just a little update:

WAPDA drew 0-0 with 3rd placed team KRL, while Army won 3-0 against Lahore's Wohaib FC (which incidentally is controlled by a religious right wing politician named Hafiz Salman Butt from the powerful Jamaat-e-Islami).

So that means Army lie 2 points ahead before their final game of the season away at WAPDA's Railways Stadium in 1-2 days time. WAPDA is still unbeaten, but they have to beat Army in the final game to win the PPL title which they last won in 2005 and stop Army from winning 3 titles in a row.

It will be sad if WAPDA end up drawing once again to Army, and lose the title despite being undefeated. Hopefully Arif Mehmood and Zulfiqar Ali Shah will go the final stretch and beat those damn soldiers and do much better in the 2008 AFC President's Cup. Maybe WAPDA's wicked right back Naveed Akram will score a cracker like he did in Pakistan colours:

                    here vs UAE in 2006

and here vs Japan in the Asian Games 2006

Incidentally Naveed Akram is from my city of Multan, and I have his cell no. Should have called him while I was back home, but after dealing with PFF bureaucrats I just couldnt be asked

WAPDA regain title after four years : Army go down 1-2

Lahore, 28 January : Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority
(WAPDA) recorded their sixth national football title when they overwhelmed Pakistan Army 2-1 in the final league match of the Pakistan Premier Football League at Lahore's Railway Stadium. A big crowd watched Bank Al-Falah sponsored league deciding match. The two teams are also dominant force of national events since 2001. The electricitymen lifting the title in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 while Army winning the editions in 2005 and 2006.

Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)'s President Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat was chief guest of the match and on his direction revised cash money presented to teams and players. WAPDA took the winning trophy and gold medals from PFF Chief in addition to Rs. 5 lac while Bank Al-Falah representative Muhammad Riazul Haq presented Army silver medals and Rs.3lacs.

Khan Research Laboratories had took bronze medals and Rs.2 lacs. Army's left full back was adjudged Most Valuable Player (MVP) and he pocketted Rs. 50,000 while leading marksman Arif Mehmood (WAPDA, 21 goals) and best goal-keeper Amir Qureshi (KRL) took Rs. 30,000 each. In order to promote Sportsmanship, PFF Chief had also decided to hand over Rs.50,000 to winner of Fair Play trophy and PTV deserved the award with
                            sportsmanship throughout 92-day show.

The first half saw cautious display from both outfits. WAPDA did get
goal-scoring chances but Imran Niazi and Yasir Iqbal missed them in
the 23rd and 43rd minute. There was no score at interval and all the action appeared in the second session. Army opened the second half in speedy fashion and could have scored through substitute Shakil Gill but he miscued drives in the 53rd and 56th minute.

The deadlock was broken in the 63rd minute through an own goal : fourth of the competion in 180 matches. The angular ball of WAPDA's left full Jamshed Anwar created panic among soldiers and Army's left-full Tanveer Shahid, in a confusion, steered the ball past his own keeper Mahmood Ahmed.

WAPDA consolidated the lead in the 80th minute when substitute midfielder Zeeshan Aslam paved the gap for striker Arif Mehmood to hammer the ball past bemused Mehmood . It was Arif's 21 goal of the event.

Army earned the honor-saving goal in the 88th minute. Midfielder Michael
Gill collected the ball that came to him all the way from midfield and he hooked the ball past keeper Abdul Aziz from just outside the area.

The soldiers managed 57 points from their 26 matches while WAPDA, who never missed the top two slots since 2001, secured 58 points from as many matches.WAPDA also become 53rd National Football Champion of Pakistan and representative of Pakistan in fourth AFC President's Cup 2008.

Pakistan WAPDA have also joined Karachi as third successful team of National Championship with six titles, after table-topper Pakistan International Airlines (9 titles), Punjab (8 titles). Pakistan Army collected the title four times, ABL and Balochistan won the top berth thrice, followed by two-times champion Dhaka, Sindh, Pakistan Railways, Faisalabad's Crescent Textile Mills. Peshawar, East Pakistan, Chittagong, Habib Bank Limited, Quetta and Pakistan Air Force managed to win the national event once.

The deciding league match was supervised by Rauf Bari, supported on the line by Waheed Murad, Shahid Hussain. Asif Kiani was fourth official.
