Aside from the fact that we should have played better, the first 2 Liverpool goals were false.
goal 1 = foul on Pepe and goal 2 = ball on shoulder not hand.

who knows maybe those goals brought the moral down, but the only player that really wanted to win this was Raul. Higuain, Gago, Sneijder and Marcelo all looked so dejected and like a bunch of teenagers who wanted to accept failure.
    first goal wasn't foul.
but the penalty was too harsh, it was very close and it hit the shoulder anyway!

how about raul getting clearly penalty-worthy fouled (clearly sandwiched) in the box? that was surely more of a penalty than heinzes unintentional shoulder hit? and what are your views on vdv getting kicked in the arm, ref waiting, raul getting the ball and about to shoot while 1 on 1 with reina, then the ref blows whistle, shows no card, and gives a free kick? and also what are your views on the 3rd possible madrid goal, higuains 50-50 onside offside goal?

its not about trying hard. you can't keep a coach for more than a season, and the majority of your recent signing have been wastes of money.

        its mismanagement thats killing you.

casillas was the best player on the pitch, lass was amazing, marcelo was good. raul, higuain, vdv, sneidjer, and ramos were decent. guti was bad. gago was bad. heinze was bad. robben was invisible. pepe and cannavaro deserve to get shot.

we are the 2nd youngest team in europe with inexperienced players. and its kinda hard to do that when the coach will change every year. we need time to build on this team. the british teams have been playing with the same players for years. this real madrid team has only started playing together since last season!

well, that and the fact that your just being mismanaged right now. you players just aren't cutting it and the fact that you don't want to hold onto a coach isn't helping any.

robben criminally flopped. he was the difference maker... he made us play with 10 men. even drenthe would have been more effective than him.

Who said RM are the 2nd youngest in Europe? Liverpool, Man. Utd, Arsenal all have younger squads than RM and that's just looking in the top 4 of the EPL.

Spanish Inquisition: Do Real Madrid Kids Deserve Another Chance?

The Champions League's most successful club suffered their biggest ever defeat in the competition last night, and Goal.com's Sulmaan Ahmad wonders why...

Few with unclouded judgement were banking on Real Madrid accomplishing anything at Anfield other than perhaps saving face. They didn't even manage that. They had their face ripped off, dragged through the mud and left hanging from the corner flag.

The clash was billed as the two Champions League greats. In reality, there was the great - in the form of Real Madrid and their nine trophies - with almost twice Liverpool's haul of five. However, over the course of the two legs, it was the Reds who ended up looking twice the side.

Since the Galacticos era went sour, los Blancos have done an outstanding job of embarrassing themselves - and to particularly special effect in Europe, the stage on which all eyes are fixed; the stage that has witnessed the obliteration of the club's reputation among the general public. Not even back-to-back Primera Division titles did much of anything to restore any kind of credibility.

The Liverpool loss tallies Madrid's fifth straight second round elimination, off the back of an era in which they won the competition an outstanding three times in five years. At first, there was a club in turmoil, then one in transition. What this tie showed is that this transition is, despite the time and money spent, far from being complete. The real problem is deciding whether to stick or twist with the current philosophy, coach and players.

What was perhaps most alarming was the contrast in weaknesses shown in each leg. At the Santiago Bernabeu, we saw a side solid on the most part but lacking guile and creativity. At Anfield, they exhibited many of the stereotypical weaknesses of Madrid in recent years; inviting too much pressure on themselves in an almost complacent manner that as good as put the game beyond them before they knew what had happened.

But Madrid aren't really bad as all that. They have shamed themselves, but there is more to it beyond them simply not being good enough. Liverpool played two of their three best games of the season (the other being the win over Manchester United at Anfield) - so due credit must be given to them. A top side playing at their very best will be a match for any other top side who are even slightly off the mark.

And furthermore, it must be acknowledged that while Fernando Torres' arm on Pepe's shoulder before scoring the opening goal should never be considered a foul in what is a contact sport, the fact of the matter is that such contact is deemed every day of every week as a foul and Madrid were not given a break that more often than not would have been in their favour.

If that decision was contentious, the one that as good as killed the game was atrocious. Gabriel Heinze was adjudged to have handballed in a situation he could have done little about even if it had hit his arm - and for the record, it came off his shoulder. Steven Gerrard made no mistake from the spot. Then the goals at the top and bottom of the second half were simply the result of a team pushing to reduce a seemingly insurmountable deficit.

Amidst the commotion, los Merengues even created a handful of good chances and were often inches away from scoring some spectacular strikes. It just wasn't meant to happen for them. But even if that was the case, taking no credit away from a Liverpool side played their part as deserving winners, a 4-0 scoreline is inexcusable in the 'White House'.

It's true, scorelines are all too often deceptive, but perspective is offered in the form of some frightening statistics. Real Madrid have not lost by four goals since the 1999-2000 season, in which they twice fell to Real Zaragoza (4-0 and 5-1), 4-0 to Malaga and indeed 5-0 to city rivals Atletico Madrid. Another fun fact: in that very season, they did away with even trying in the Liga - as you can see - and picked up their eighth Champions League in the process. How very Liverpool. Madrid have never lost in the Champions League by such a margin, but did lose 5-0 to AC Milan 20 years ago - that was them in a slump, against probably the best Rossoneri side of all time.

Is that where we are now? Has it taken 20 years to come full circle and hit such an incredible low? Or was it really just an anomaly?

Surely, this is a Madrid side on the way up. They are in a way similar to the top Italian sides that have also suffered on the continent in recent seasons. Within their own league, the football can be flowing, team balance brilliant and confidence incredible, but put them in Europe and it all falls apart. Part of the problem just comes in adjusting to the pressing nature of the preeminent Premier League sides, but beyond that, Madrid have clearly let their slump get the better of them. The anxiety was palpable in both legs and inhibited their otherwise ever-improving style of play.

After the first leg, so little could be blamed on the players, but in this instance, individuals were exposed in such a way that may cost them their standing as Madridistas when Florentino Perez takes over as president in the summer. He seems destined to be elected, and he does not stand for imperfection, much less such unadulterated humiliation.

Fabio Cannavaro, for all his resurgence under Juande Ramos, certainly isn't the man for one and all occasions anymore. He cannot be first choice. Heinze was unlucky to concede the penalty, but he arguably put Madrid in this position in the first place due to his actions in the first leg; if that had ended 0-0 in the Bernabeu, the Anfield game would have been entirely different.

One genuine worry is Fernando Gago. His lack of pace is one thing, but coupled with a lack of urgency in possession and quick-thinking can make him a liability in high-pressure games of this nature - which are clearly where reputations are made and broken. Though still young, Gago is a player of a very specific mould and thus his scope for change may not be all that great and more importantly, his window to prove himself may have passed, if Perez has his way. Maybe it has just been a bad couple of weeks for the Olympic gold medal winner, but it was the most publicised two weeks of his career as a footballer so far. It is possible that he may only realise his full potential with a team built around him, which is not a luxury likely to be afforded to him in the Spanish capital.

And as if that wasn't enough, the infamously free-scoring Real Madrid couldn't cut it up front, either. Neither of the forwards showed the ability they have in La Liga to drag the team to a result. They don't seem up to the challenge. Maybe they were outnumbered in the first leg and starved of service in the second, but ultimately, this is Real Madrid: there can only be so many excuses. Raul will almost certainly be subjected to squad rotation next season, in order to prolong his career and improve his performances in the mould of a Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes, while Gonzalo Higuain, for all his development, may not be given the time of day if Karim Benzema is available in the summer.

These players remain inexperienced in Champions League competition, barring the likes of Cannavaro and Raul who are simply getting too old. The rest need time - Madrid have the youngest squad of all Europe's big boys second only to Arsenal. But this is not Arsenal. This is the harsh reality of Real Madrid.

Napoli President: Fabio Cannavaro? Too Old

Cannavaro's age will apparently prevent him from joining his home town team as De Laurentiis affirmed that he has no intention of signing a player in his mid-30s.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis was reported by Yahoo.it as rubbishing the possibility of signing international defender Fabio Cannavaro from Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Cannavaro has often been linked with a move to the Azzurri, where he would re-unite with his brother Paolo, but this latest statement of De Laurentiis will surely put an end to all speculation.

"Do you really think that I would consider a player of 34 or 35 years of age who plays in defence?" asked the Partenopei's patron rhetorically.

"If he was an attacker, one who scores goals, I would think about it, but a defender..."

The World Cup winning defender has been with Real Madrid for the past two and a half years, where he played over 100 games for the Merengues, winning two league titles and a Spanish Super Cup.
