                  Will robinho save RealMadrid

At least, that's what the Madrid media will hope.

Marca, and to a slightly lesser extent As, have been all aflutter this week with the news that young Robinho could return from his injury lay-up in time to face Recreativo Huelva on Saturday.

It's hard to overestimate the level of fanfare that will accompany Robinho's return. Not only will the Brazilian offer a boost on the playing side, but he'll also raise morale off the pitch, for he'll signal a change in the lineup that has contrived to lose three games in a row.

Thus, he could be key in turning it all around.

So, just as yesterday we looked at how Real Madrid are contriving to throw it away, today we can look at how they'll look to claw it back.

                  The Two C's

Robinho is versatile enough to play right across the front line, but Bernd Schuster has him marked out as a winger, and this is where he will most likely return.

That's encouraging for any number of reasons, but two factors stand out above all others: consistency and creativity.

For Real Madrid have, over the course of their last two Liga games in particular, somehow immediately shed both of these virtues. In terms of creating chances, they're just not doing it.

It's hard to pinpoint a single culprit, and perhaps even unfair to do so, but to look at one particular subject, consider Guti. Against Almeria, Betis and Getafe, the playmaker just didn't turn it on: only against Valladolid was he at his best, and one may reasonably ask if a masterclass showing in one game excuses three near-anonymous showings in others.

Robinho, meanwhile, was an instrumental figure around November, December and January, when even a slightly sub-par Real Madrid could launch at least one or two irresistible counter-attacks over the course of the ninety minutes, and he could do it in most matches. It's no coincidence that, of his 21 league appearances so far, only four have failed to end in victories. In other words, Robinho has played in all but one of Madrid's Liga wins so far, and more often than not he's been key.

Guti, meanwhile, has taken part in just one more match, but has a winless tally of seven.

As stated earlier, it's unfair to single out Guti - after all, he doesn't take to the pitch alone - but he is in many ways emblematic of the kind of Madrid underachievement that only the likes of Robinho have proven themselves apt to change.

Bernd Schuster, then, will be eager to bring him back by Saturday.

                  Weight Of Expectation

But, again, this can bring one of yesterday's problems back into sharp focus: over-reliance on a few key players.

Just as Raul and Ruud are untouchable up front, so too is Robinho in support, and that could mean an immediate return to Liga action in Huelva, followed by a very brief rest before being thrown to the lions - or wolves - of Roma.

Robinho is nothing if not self-confident, so the idea that he'd shy away from the challenge on a mental level is misguided. However, he is human, and has not proven to be 100% robust this season. It could be a case of too much, too soon - and that would have longer-term ramifications extending far beyond his own fitness, but into the heart of the title race itself.

The same goes for Pepe, who must now labour not only under the weight of a ludicrously inflated price tag - fine player though he is - but must also make a comeback from injury in time for midweek European action. Mentally, this will prey on him - his opponents will know that he's not at the absolute peak of fitness and will adjust their game accordingly.

In short, while Madrid's treatment table clear-up will certainly help, it is not a panacea, and could all too easily flare up again if the return of such players - Robinho in particular - isn't treated with restraint.

For while it may seem that Robinho's immediate return must be hastened at all costs, in fact, the very opposite is true. He must come back and play a key role only when ready.

                  The Other Side

Of course, Barcelona have shown at certain times this season that they, too, have their sacred cows that they just cannot be without. Samuel Eto'o is the oft-given example, but I believe that there is another: Yaya Toure.

All it could take for Barcelona to stumble again is for one of these players to end up injured, Iniesta to go off form, or for

The title race may still be in Madrid's hands, but what could ultimately help them even more than a RObinho recovery is a Barcelona injury...

where is it written that if one team gets a red card you must try to give the other team a red card also? ramos tries to head the ball and his hand hits the opponents and he gets his second yellow and now its 10 on 10. la liga refs SUCK.

Don't get ahead of yourself either. Recre deserved at least one penalty and Raul's goal was offside.
