LOL no they're not better
BUT i do believe in miracles and as they say...the ball is round
crazy upsets dont happen in basketball because of the high frequency of the scores. We actually have a higher chance at beating brazil in football

your absolutely right..the last upset i can remember was when lebanon beat france in the WC 06 in basketball in Japan, I wouldnt say Greece beating US is an upset because we have several stronger points than they do...
also, international ball shows some players really step up..for example, Darko Milicic is considered an NBA bust, but in tournys hes a 20-10 guy, so i guess its safe to say Manu will probably be on the olympic all tourny team
we will have it hard, even if we were in the other group, personally as i said before i dont think we as a team are close to the other countries. but still its great seeing Iran in a world stage in basketball. Hopefully they will stay close in some of the games and maybe pick up a win.
One of my old roomates and good friend has been training with the Olympic team in Tehran for the past few weeks, trying to make the Beijing squad. He was born and raised in the US, but is a huge Iran-doost whose dream has always been to represent Iran.
He was a big time high school player in Orange County and tried to make the UCLA team as a walk-on, but never made the cut. Considering how elite UCLA is, thats nothing to be ashamed of. He originally went to Iran for a tryout last year, but came back without much success, attributing it to his sub-par conditioning. Since returning, he entered an elite training and conditioning program in LA that caters only to the world's top athletes, specifically NBA stars like Kevin Garnett, Baron Davis, Chauncey Billups, etc. David Beckham trains there as well and he would regularly see him in the gym. He went back to Iran this time around in world-class shape.
Its also partially "party-bazi", since he is close family friends with the head of Iran's basketball federation. I talked to him a few days ago to see how things were going so far, and he said that he's gotten very positive reactions from the players as well as the Iranian assistant coaches, although the Serbian head coach is ice cold and he can't get a reaction or feel from him.
His name is Idean and he is a 5'11 combo guard. He's already come a long way, I hope he makes the team.

That's cool. I was reading about that on ISNA. I think there's a really tall Iranian-Canadian kid there too.
I wish them all the best of luck and hope Iran's national basketball team can show a respectable performance.

Holy shit. The article mentions a guy named "Ahmad Shahangian" from the United States. My friend's name is Idean Shahangian. I think they got his name wrong, but thats definitely him. Wow, thanks for the article.
I went to the official website and just found a pic of him. He's on the bottom row 3rd from the left. Haha, this is nuts. I never thought I'd see my roomate in uniform with the Iranian Olympic team.

If he makes the final cut, get him to hook you up with tickets.

inshallah he will make it. and inshallah we will win a game or 2 at the olympics.
I'm an avid fan of Iranian basketball and follow the league and national team a lot. Iran is unlikely to win a game at the olympics to be perfectly honest mainly to our players lacking the technical ability of the teams in our group all of whom have NBA/NBA callibre players. This is gonna be an awsome experience for our players though and attract interest from European and NBA teams hopefully.
Some news:
- Iran trialled 2 North America based players Aidin Shahangian (UCLA) and Hamed Nazzari (Douglas College).
- Yashar Mohammadpour (Azad) and Yousef Arefi (Petrochimi) dropped from team due to living outside of Iran and not attending training
IRAN NT PLAN UNTIL OLYMPICS:
April: 6 weeks Training in Tehran
June: 14 days training and friendly matches in Italy and Serbia
and going to Croatia, Slovenia and Lithuania !!! for train and friendly matches against NTs and Clubs.
July: 2 weeks Training in Tehran
August: Diamond Ball Tournament + 2 friendly matches against Spain , Russia or Angola in Beijing
- Also Haddadi has rejected offers from all over Europe as he is waiting for big offers from NBA
