they deserved the cup but how long they would maintain that form was questionable.

They didn't deserve the Cup either.

They were playing the friendly while knowing Iraq was soon to be suspended from all international competitions.

Go look at the front page of Goal.com.

                      http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=711178

Also, the Iraqi government won't back down because it claims the committee it dissolved had nothing to do with the football federation:

"We have replied to them (FIFA) in a formal letter yesterday, telling
them that the disbanding ... doesn't cover the sports federations in which the soccer
                      federation is included," Jaafar said.

"If FIFA insists on banning Iraq from participating in the
                      next World Cup competition,
the government won't pull back from its decision ... for the sake of a football match."

Sepp Blatter clearly has specific interests other than allowing Iraqi people the privilege of watching their national team play:

Blatter backs Australia's World Cup bid

                      Little Aussie Blatter

                      Blatter backs Australia's Cup bid

Looks like the team won't be traveling to Brisbane for Sunday's fixture against Australia.

Assuming they knew they were about to get suspended it still has no bearing on the result. The result was achieved on the field regardless of outside circumstances.

Iran's form hasn't been too peachy either.

Anyway, Emerson of Qatar has been suspended by FIFA so Iraq could have possibly received 3 points, but eh, not anymore...but there is hope if a deal is brokered by midnight (Sydney time) on May 29th.

True but this thread isn't comparing Iran to Iraq, it's about the Iraq-Thailand game.
