The ref for the Iraq - Qatar game was going to be Sa'ad Kamel of Kuwait (who's reffed at the World Cup and other major tournaments) but has picked up an "injury" and will not be able to referee the match. Now another ref has been assigned, the notorious Ali Hamad of UAE who every Iraqi fan knows as he's screwed us over in several important matches, especially vs. Saudi Arabia in the last Persian Gulf Cup. Furthermore, Qatar's illegal Brazilian player Emerson has been suspended but NO POINTS will be awarded to Iraq. This is directly in conflict with FIFA statutes! It's disgusting, the other day Iraq's U-17 team that smashed Saudi Arabia 3-0 in their own venue was later on disqualified from the upcoming AFC U-17 Championship because of a 3rd keeper who's taken part in the previous edition of U-17 qualifiers. Iraq appealed several times to no avail, as the people who filed the complaint were the Saudis. Qatar's very own Bin Hammam and the AFC have been so blatant with their cheating it makes me sick to my stomach. Qatar need a win at all costs because a draw will see Iraq advance, so they'll be trying everything come Sunday.

Is it true that the Iraqi FA actually agreed to Cairo as a first choice for "home" matches, and later settled for Amman and Dubai after FIFA rebuffed? I've seen reports that both Iraq and Palestine were invited by Egypt to play their home matches in Cairo a few years back, and both immediately agreed to this as a first choice. However, FIFA used some lame excuse that Iraq and Palestine both had to play in an AFC venue, and that the National Stadium in Cairo is a CAF venue. Just curious about what you know on the issue.

DOHA: Qatar coach Jorge Fossati will arrive in the UAE today with a 27-strong squad for their do-or-die 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying battle on Sunday with Asian champions Iraq.


Only a win at the Al Ahli Stadium will see Fossati's Qatar through while a draw suffices for Iraq to qualify as the second team from Group 1 after Australia, but the Uruguayan, who is likely to be sacked if their World Cup dream ends prematurely, faces the prospect of going into the match without inspirational captain and defender Abdullah Koni.

Koni was replaced in the first half after injuring his hamstring in the 3-1 mauling to Australia last week in Doha and his absence could leave a big hole in Qatar's defence much to the delight of the attack-minded Iraqis.

But Fossati, who coached Qatari powerhouse Al Sadd last year, put his trust in his men who he claimed had learnt from their earlier mistakes.

“We still have a chance to qualify,” said the 55-year-old former Uruguay national team manager. “If we beat Iraq we will do it, so I trust my players to deliver.”

“Hopefully, we will have learned from our mistakes and we won't make those mistakes against Iraq. Actually, I am confident that we will beat Iraq and qualify for the next stage.”
