    UAE-Syria

If we only beat Syria 1-0 instead of 2-0 then Syria and UAE would have had the same points (8) and the same goal difference (7 7 = 0).

Does that mean Syria would have gone through to the final round because of their head to head results with UAE (1-1 + 3-1)?

i dunno about this game, but there was a time some years back in Dubai, i think it was Al Nasr team had arranged something similar.

every time their team was losing, towards the end of the game, they would shut down the stadium lights to cancel the game or something ...

          so its quite possible

            UAE-Syria conspiracy

okay guys im not a conspiracy nut but apperantly while Syria was attacking and were up 2-0 the lights "magicially" turned off in the stadium, which is why the game went for so long and syria scored in the 99th min. Even the syrian coach said it stopped our flow... what if someone turned them off if thats the case then shame on them

He wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

AL AIN – Syria coach Mohammed Kwid had every reason to be disappointed after his team narrowly missed out on a place in the final round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers despite a gallant 3-1 away win over United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

The Syrian needed to win by a three-goal margin at Tahnon bin Mohammed Stadium to leapfrog UAE into second place in Group Five and a brace by Jihad Al Hussain gave them hope of a miracle victory.

But Ismail Matar converted a penalty kick for the Emirates and the Syrians came up a goal short when Firas Al Khatib netted Syria’s third deep into stoppage time.

"Everything went against us," said Kwid after the game, which was interrupted midway through the second half by a floodlight failure. "We not only didn't have luck on our side, but some of the refereeing decisions went against us.

“Even the stadium lights that went off for a while gave the home side a breather and broke the rhythm of our play.

"But overall we played well and we kept to the plan. The players did a wonderful job on the pitch and gave everything and it was really, really sad to go out this way.

“It was the penalty that finally ended our chances. I'm not blaming anyone for that but that made all the difference at the end."

UAE coach Bruno Metsu admitted that his side were lucky to advance at the end.

"We didn't take the chances that came our way and nearly paid for it. This only goes to prove that nothing is guaranteed in football,” the Frenchman said.

"Syria played a fantastic game. They played with more commitment and purpose.

“We were up against a strong team and they proved that tonight. I think my players learnt a good lesson from this game and it was good for them to realize not to take anything for granted."

Metsu is confident that his side will show better form in the final round of the qualifiers, which begin in September.

“I still think we are a decent enough side to come back recharged for the final round. We have some work to do and I am hopeful we can go all the way,” he said.

"This was the heaviest defeat since we lost (2-0) to Vietnam in the Asian Cup almost a year ago. I see that they have played well throughout the year, so this is one match we can forget.”

If the Syrians had some money they could have complained to FIFA and gotten something ruled in their favor.
Not surprised by UAE dirty tactics.

As Iranians we should all know, nothing is ever easy against these little Persian Gulf Arab nations.
You always have to be careful. They score one goal, and they start falling and wasting time as if the field is full of mines.

True. Syria was always known for physical somewhat boring football, but they were never cheaters. Even in the 90s they would give TM a tough time in games.
