REAL MADRID face a player revolt if they win their transfer tug-of-war with Manchester United and sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Senior Real stars – influential captain Raul, Spain’s Euro 2008-winning goalkeeper Iker Casillas and defender Michel Salgado – are all concerned at the negative impact Ronaldo’s arrival could have on team spirit.
They are said to be upset as president Ramon Calderon is in breach of an earlier promise he made to them, according to Spanish sports paper El Mundo Deportivo. In a bid to avoid a return to the damaging days of the Galacticos era, Calderon apparently said that in order for a player to sign for Real he must pass three tests.
Firstly, he must be wanted by both the coach and technical staff at all levels; secondly, his behaviour must accord with the philosophy of the club; and finally, the Madrid players, particularly the captain, must consider him to be a player who will “improve the team and help the group”.
But Calderon has not asked for the opinions of his senior players, because he knows their response will be: “We don’t want Ronaldo.”
Leading goalscorer Ruud van Nistelrooy’s shock departure from United two years ago was precipitated by a training-ground bust-up with Ronaldo.
