He has the option to return to the NBA after every season. A lot of teams will have cap space to sign free agents next season, so I think that was his aim. Get paid big in Greece for a year and then come back next season when teams have money to spend.

I saw him at a bar in San Jose last summer. He was a big time college player at Stanford.
