Brazil won its third straight Beach Soccer World Cup title Sunday, defeating Italy 5-3 behind two goals apiece from Bruno and Sidney.
Portugal took the third-place game, getting three goals from Madjer in a 5-4 victory over Spain. Amarelle had three goals for Spain and earned the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. Madjer was the top scorer with 13 goals.
Brazil downed an Italian team that had never advanced past the first round and featured the son of soccer great Diego Maradona, who once starred for Napoli.
“We still want to do more and prove to the entire world that we are the best,” Brazil forward Benjamin said. “I think that we can be proud of ourselves.”
The Brazilians jumped ahead 5-0 in the first 30 minutes before Italy rallied. Andre had the other goal for Brazil. Italy’s goals were by Paolo Palmacci, Roberto Pasquali and Diego Maradona Jr. and came in a five-minute burst.
“Our initial aim was to reach the quarterfinals,” Italy forward Massimiliano Esposito said. “So we’re pleased to have exceeded our expectations by such a distance. It’s a huge performance.”
