Russia vs. Iran (group A) Preview

In this first match-up of Men's Basketball, the European champion is pitted against the Asian champion. Russia qualified for the Games as the gold medal winners of the 2007 EuroBasket, finishing undefeated in the tournament over strong teams like Lithuania and Serbia to eventually beat World Champion Spain by one point in the final. US-born point guard J.R. Holden's jumper with 2.1 seconds left secured Russia their first-ever European Championship with a score of 60-59. Holden became a citizen of Russia after playing many years for CSKA Moscow.

The Russian team has its own home-grown stars, including Utah Jazz forward and EuroBasket Most Valuable Player Andrei Ki.rilenko, who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a friendly match against the United States on August 3 in Shanghai, China. Russia lost that warm-up by 21 points, but Iran is a team that Russia can likely handle.

Iran beat Lebanon in the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship for an Olympic berth, their first trip to the Games since 1948. Iran's team is very young and does not boast any NBA professionals, but they have had the chance to practice together for the last four months. The standout player on the team is 2.18 meter-tall center Hamed Hadadi, who averaged 31 points per game in the Asia Championship finals and 9.6 rebounds per game overall in the tournament. Hadadi also led the 2007 EuroBasket in blocks.

Javad Davari is another one to watch for Iran, recently netting 46 points over three games to be Iran's second-highest scorer in the Diamond Ball for Men this August, and the sixth-highest scorer in the tournament overall. Center Hadadi also led China's Houston Rockets star Yao Ming in the warm-up tournament with blocked shots, with a tournament high of 11 blocks over Yao's four.

One of Iran's biggest basketball talents, Aidin Nikkah Bahrami, died in a car accident last December, but his brother Mohammadsamad Nik Kah will be making his Olympic debut in this opening game against Russia.

Any word on whether Kamrany has recovered from his injury? Its crucial he plays since he's our starting PG and one of our best players.
