Because Van is not a big Sport place.

They are not even too big on their Hockey team like the rest of Canada is.

Grizzlies GM Wallace: Iranian long on potential
Iavaroni's track record a benefit for Haddadi
By Ronald Tillery (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal
          Saturday, August 30, 2008

Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace acknowledged Friday that the team hasn't exactly unearthed a second coming of Hakeem Olajuwon for the upcoming season.

But Wallace stopped short of labeling Iranian Hamed Haddadi a project, and cautioned others to do the same with regard to the 7-2 center's ability.

"I don't like to use that term because it suggests that he's not someone who can contribute in the short term," Wallace said. "And that's not the case. He's going to need some work in certain aspects of his game. But he's 7-2. You can't teach height. He can rebound and block shots, and he can score around the basket with his left hand. He has an outside shooting touch, and he's fared well in (summer league and Olympic) games."

Haddadi signed a multiyear contract with the Griz and will become the first Iranian to play in the NBA once he reports to training camp in October. The Griz were looking to add more rebounding and interior defense. Haddadi comes with an intriguing, albeit short, resume.

The 23-year-old led all Olympians in rebounding and blocks during pool play. Haddadi was the only player to average a double-double (16.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) in the Beijing Olympics.

Those accomplishments would seem to make Haddadi less of a risk than Cezary Trybanski, an unknown Polish center the Griz signed to a three-year, $4.8 million contract in 2002.

"I'm not going to say we shouldn't sign Hamed because a foreign big man that preceded him didn't work out," Wallace said. "You can't look at it that way. In basketball, you can never have too many big centers. You need as much depth as you can get. If we develop Hamed, he's going to be a real asset for our organization in the future."

Wallace also pointed to Griz coach Marc Iavaroni's "track record working with young big men" as one of many driving forces behind the acquisition.

"Adding a young center who has some real potential as a shot-blocker and rebounder is where we thought we needed to go with the 13th spot on our roster at this point and time," Wallace said.

After going unselected in the 2004 NBA draft, Haddadi became a free agent eligible to sign with any team. He has played with several clubs in the Iranian professional league, including Peyakan and Sanam. He spent last season with Saba Battery in the Iranian Super League.

Haddadi was cleared to play for the NBA after U.S. government officials granted the league an Office of Foreign Assets Control license.
