Goalkeepers
Two reliable guys that rise to the occasion under pressure. Hadary gets the nod given his overall experience and performance in big games. Demirel is the odd man out because he's somewhat erratic and temperamental under pressure.
GK Essam El-Hadary, EGYPT (FC Sion, SWI)
GK Ali Al-Habsi, OMAN (Bolton Wanderers, ENG)
Defenders
Big, powerful centerbacks along with some versatile players that can play on the sides or in the middle. Left out the aging, limited Suleimani. Also eliminated the 6'2" Fathalla from the original list as he's a bit inexperienced despite his potential.Midfielders
The midfield is the strength of the Middle East's backbone teams (Egypt, Iran, Turkey), so this was the hardest area to reduce. I left out Hossam Ghaly since he hasn't played in a while. I cut Hosny Abd Rabbo, the 2008 African Nations Cup MVP, as his form has dropped. I'm also pissed off he chose Dubai over his Spain offers. Shojaei was the third man dropped. This is a good mix of reliable stalwarts and versatile veterans that excelled in Europe. Also some playmakers with deft touches.Forwards
Talented, youthful mix, some playing at the highest levels. A good mix of speedy dribblers low to the ground and bigger, more powerful strikers. Left out the aging, out of form Hashemian.Starting lineups
