Abdel Zaher El Saka, the veteran defender, has been a new victim of racism. This time, his new coach Samet Aybaba prevented the centre back from training and said anti-Arab statements about him which angered the supporters who made a press conference and asked the club board to sack the racist coach.
Coach Samet Aybaba
As EP stated, Egyptian centre back Abdel Zaher El Saka is on his way out of Genclerbirligi in the coming transfer window, possibly to Konyaspor who are in need of an experienced defender and were about to sign Egyptian Bashir El Tabei, but the latter preferred to sign for Bursaspor.
El Saka was prevented by the new coach Samet Aybaba from attending training sessions with the rest of his teammates. The club supporters backed El Saka against the new manager which angered Samet Aybaba who stated to the press:
"They prefer an Arab over me"
After this unexpected racist statement, supporters club Alkaralar held a press conference in which they stated:
"Mutual respect is our goal, it is more important than trophies and wins."
"It is not acceptable by any means to hear such racist statement from Samet Aybaba and we ask the club board to sack the coach for his irresponsible act of racism".
El Saka's agent Alper Gokdemir also commented on the issue by saying:
"El Saka is a model for professionals and his attitude is always exemplary. There is nothing new regarding his future at the moment. I refuse to comment over Aybaba's racist comment about Saka's ethnic origin and I believe that the whole Turkish society is against him now".
It should be noted that El Saka wasn't the only Egyptian to be a victim of racism this season as his compatriot Mido was subjected to Islamophobic taunts from Newcastle support a few weeks ago.

Maybe the guy's just pissed over what happened when the Mongols tried to invade Egypt?

saying "arab defender" isn't really racist
if there was a french defender...and he said the same thing...
"The 'French' defender was more important than him"...does that sound as racist? definitely not!
sadly there is a negative connotation with Arab in people's minds

im just not sure...cuz it cud go both ways, i mean if u gave him the benefit of the doubt...i donno
its very iffy
the removal of 'defender' from the end of the statement would make it much more racist...since the entire emphasis will be on the nationality
u just can't say 100% that it was in fact racist...although it does look that way more than likely

If that's his reasoning for the comments then he wouldn't be upset with Arabs since the Mamluks were Turkic/Central Asian/South East European, not arab
That Gencler manager looks totally Mongol.

Originally posted by Pharaoh View PostNo, it was mainly the Egyptian Mamluks that fought the invading Monguls/Armenians/Georgians. Mamluk simply means slave soldier. It does not infer any ethnicity. The belligerents that fought this war are described as an "Egyptian Mamluk" majority by pretty much every source, though the sources also say that many of them were Turkic or Circassian. The most extreme estimates have half being Turkic or Circassian, though it was likely less than that. They played a very significant role however due to the their tactical experience versus the invaders.

the manager said arab defender...are we now equating egyptian to arab? y wud he take out his anger by saying Arab Defender if he's pissed about the Egyptian Mamluks who were not arab.
egyptian doesn't signify a race or ethnicity in this context...simply means they were mamluks of Egypt...or Slaves of egypt. they are not egyptian in the same sense you are (but u might be a decedent of them so I can't say for sure, wish i was!)
doesn't change the fact that early american slaves were west african and not american racially or ethnically...simply property of america
regarding % being Turkic/Mongol....its impossible to know, i can assure you that none of them were Arab...or Persian...or Jews for that matter...
Circassian, Armenian, Greeks, Albanian, Turks, Mongols and Slavs...its possible they were other races/ethnicities...
anyways, back on topic...i really hope he didn't mean anything racist by what he said, most turks aren't as racist as some of the other ethnic groups in the middle east...u guys know who im talking about.
