playing abroad decreases your chances for playing for the german national team massively.
there have been a couple of (national team) players who went for an adventure abroad. the result was that they werent observed anymore by the nt coach. and people forgot about these players all together.
the current example is eugen polanski. he was the captain of the U21 nt and considered as one of the biggest talents. he went to getafe. there he is an absolute leader on the field. he has become a great player, but nobody is giving a crap about him at the moment. people even forgot that he exists
the right defender hinkel is another example.
thomas hitzelsberger as well; he was a regular for aston villa and even wore the captain armband. he was finally called up for the national team after he moved back to a german team.
michael ballack is an exeption. he plays for chelsea, and even there he only gets mentioned in the german media on the side when he scores.
