Why do you follow national teams which you have no connection to?

Im not talking about casual support...but some of the members on this forum follow National Teams of other countries as much as some Iranians follow TM.

If you don't live in that country or are not from that country why do you support them as if you're connected to them somehow?

This goes beyond supporting a team other than Iran in the WC because Iran isn't participating...some people take it as serious as if it where Iran they are cheering for.

i dont think anyone follows them half as much as they follow iran. personally, i started following international football since 98 world cup and spain and brazil have been my fave teams ever since. i support them but i dont go crazy over them.

I dont know about people who were raised outside of Iran. But the culture in Iran was that every person liked an outside team now some took it really really seriously and even had adds in the newspapers such as etelaat and Keyhan congratulating the fans of those teams in Iran after they won a championship!!

But we all like at least one team and for me it was/is germany, why?? I dont remember but I was a kid and I can't remember why.

The very first team I ever supported was Italy because of me watching my very first game ever which was Italy vs Brazil in the 1982 World Cup and their eventual championship. This also made my first favorite player to be Zoff. Later on though I bought the soccer cards that has collective info about each team and their games in the World Cup and I realized Brazil has a better record (I even remember Brazil's total goals scored was 119). I gradually defected from Italy and ever since I have been a Brazil supporter.
Having lived in the US for so long I have also taken an interest in their team although I wouldn't exactly call it supporting them the way I follow and support Iran and Brazil.

the very first team I supported was Italy in 1998. I was 7 at the time. I remember when they lost to France (PK) in Qurater Finals, I cried for 3 hours, that my parents took me to the hospital
Italy was always a heart break for me. Euro 200 final is a night I never forget. I was very young (10) but since I am a very emotional and sensitive person, I couldn't help with my fears. in 2002, it got worse. An undeserved loss to SK and when Maldini announced retirement shortly after. in 2004, Italy was eliminated from group stage of Euro04 with Sweden and Denmark making a controversial draw.

so far, it has always been bad memories. I remember telling myself
I HAVE GOT TO GET THE REWARD OF MY PATIENCE FOR ITALY IN WC06
the day they battered Gemrany 4-1 friendly, I knew my wait will be over.
and when they won the WC. I was very very happy, maybe same level as TM.
all those frustrating moments were gone. and again they had a bad Euro. cost me 65 bucks for the Netherlands game and lost to Spain. I knew they are on a downfall.
for the past year I don't follow them as passionately. I have lost faith with them and the more time I spend on Liverpool, the less passionate I get for Azzuri. I will still respect them and wish them luck in WC2010, but I hope Liverpool (oops, my bad SPAIN) finally does well in WC.
                        peace
