Egypt's Mohamed Aboutrika Threatens To Quit Over Prostitute Claims

It's funny how so many people will believe tabloid-style slander like this. It's also sad that so many people (especially Muslim haters) wanted to believe it given how devout the Egyptian team is and the attention they got after the Brazil and Italy matches. The truth is that this is probably the last team on earth that would do such a thing.
I'm glad there are people who got satisfaction out of this story and out of what resulted against the U.S., because the Egyptian team has been through serious adversity before and it's only served as motivation to get better. For the genuine supporters here (fewer than you'd think), thanks, and rest assured that the character of this team is of the highest order and that they'll continue to make their fans proud.

Egypt receive apology over prostitutes allegations
The head of the Confederations Cup organizing committee Danny Jordaan offered an apology to the Egyptian national team over the recent saga in South Africa.
Local media in South Africa claimed that a handful of Egypt players were embroiled in a 'party with hookers' at the weekend, following the robbery of some members of the team.
The allegations, provided with no evidence, provoked a furious reaction from Egypt players and officials, especially that they received the news from home.
However, Egypt head of delegation Mahmoud Taher said that renowned South African official Jordaan backed the Pharaohs in the chaotic case.
"Jordaan admitted that the media allegations were baseless and apologized for that," Taher told FilGoal.com.
"We also received a notification from police, denying any involvement in the media claims. I think this restores the pride of our team."
Despite the gesture from Jordaan, the Egypt team still await an official clearance and an apology from the tabloid which fueled the speculation.
Meanwhile, the theft incident is still under investigation by the local police, who now have more work to do after the Brazil team rooms were ransacked as well.
South Africa are facing heavy criticism over their poor security measures, one year ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Sunday World apologizes for prostitutes allegation

The apology of Sunday World
South African paper Sunday World has published an official apology for falsely accusing several Egyptian players of hiring prostitutes during the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The notorious tabloid reported right after Egypt's historic 1-0 win over Italy that five Egyptian players spent the night with hookers at the hotel.
Some of the Egyptians' rooms were burgled at the time, and Sunday World suggested that prostitutes stole the players' personal possessions before leaving.
The publication admitted making a mistake, saying their 'well-placed sources' couldn't substantiate their claims.
"Our June 21 story about five Egyptian players inviting prostitutes to their hotel room has come back to bite us in the bum," Sunday World's statement read.
"Our well placed sources, who swore to provide evidence supporting their allegations, have since failed to stand by the information they gave us.
"Our sources include highly placed soccer officials, a senior police officer, hotel staff and a politician.
"Since publication of the story, we have been flooded with e-mails from Egyptian fans disputing the story and demanding an apology.
"We took this long to act because, until now, we felt certain we had first-hand witnesses. It is not clear to us if they are scared to speak out, or if they simply lied to us.
"One even told us of video footage in the possession of a cabinet minister, which could not be released, but which he had seen.
"But then, Sunday World is big enough to say we have boobed, when we have, and this time we say so.
"We therefore apologise to the Egyptian team and the Egyptian people for the embarrassment the story might have caused them."
Beforehand, Egypt's contingent head Mahmoud Taher threatened to sue Sunday World for libel.
Shortly after, head of Confederations Cup organizing committee Danny Jordaan made an apology on behalf of the South African media.
The South African police also confirmed there were no women accompanying Egypt players to their hotel rooms on Thursday June 18th as was baselessly alleged.
