AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - France have survived a scare from Iran to advance to the second round of the FIBA U19 World Championship, recording a hard fought 86-68 victory at ASB Stadium in Auckland.

Iran were determined to make up for their previous day?s loss to Egypt, and stunned Les Bleus in the opening quarter to take a 23-21 lead.

The French turned the defensive screws in the second quarter, holding Iran to 9 points and scoring 20 of their own, Jonathan Bourhis dominant with 13 points for the half.

The Asian champions would not go away easily, and closed to within 10 late in the third quarter after France had opened up a 15-point lead.

Christophe Leanard stepped up after a quiet game as France finished the quarter strongly, and Iran would not get closer than 13 for the rest of the contest.

Leonard finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds to join Johan Jacques (17 points, 12 rebounds), Bourhis (15 points), Nicolas Lang (14) and Alexis Tanghe (10) in double figures. Andrew Albicy recorded 8 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.

Iran were paced by Emad Salmani (25 points, 5 rebounds) and Mohammad Amjad (13 points) and will approach their first classification game against Angola on Monday with confidence.

France finish second in Group B and now face Puerto Rico, Lithuania and Greece in the second round on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Angola has broken free from the offensive doldrums that have plagued their tournament, outscoring Iran 25-12 in a decisive third quarter to set up a thrilling 9-point victory at the FIBA U19 World Championship in New Zealand.

Playing for positions 13-16, Iran took a 23-11 quarter time lead, and looked set for an easy victory. But Angola hung tough in the second quarter to be within 9 points at half time, before unleashing their third quarter burst.

After shooting just 9/30 from the field in the first half, the African runners up nailed 8/18 field goals as they took their first lead of the game, 39-37, with 4:19 remaining in the period.

Forward Eduardo Ferreira led the way with 6 points for the third quarter and 19 for the game. Miguel Kiala continued his excellent form inside with 14 points, 20 rebounds and 3 blocks, as Angola scored 30 points in the paint to Iran?s 16.

Angola led 50-43 at the last break, and held on to win after Iran closed to 52-48 with 7:04 to play in the game. The final score was 62-53, and came about despite Angola shooting just 13/28 from the free throw line.

For Iran, it was the second time in the tournament they have given up a double figure lead and lost, and the Asian champions are now confined to playing the loser of New Zealand and Syria for 15th and 16th position in the tournament.

Their best performer today was captain Arsalan Kazemi with 19 points, 20 rebounds and 4 steals. No other player reached double figures for Iran, who shot just 5/37 in the second half.

Angola will finish their tournament in the playoff for 13th position, which would equal their best ever performance at a FIBA U19 World Championship.

AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - An incredible first half from Mohammad Amjad has propelled Iran to its first victory of the tournament and 15th place at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

Amjad nailed 5/7 three pointers in the opening two periods to record 23 points for the half in just 15:12 of court time, to end all Syrian hopes of recording their first win.

Iran led 25-20 at quarter time, with Tarek Al Jabe?s 8 points keeping Syria within reach. But a 12-4 run to start the second quarter extended the lead to 13, with the Iranians going on to lead 51-31 at half time.

The second half was all Iran, outscoring their Asian rivals 42-22 to run out 93-53 winners.

Amjad finished with 29 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 28:47. Amazingly, he had scored just 26 points in the first four games of the tournament. Captain Arsalan Kazemi also farewelled the tournament in style, recording 23 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks.

For Syria, who finish in 16th place, only Al Jabe put up any stern resistance with 14 points and 5 boards.

The next underage tournament for both teams will be the 2010 U18 Asian Championship.
